Man Sang Toy

Man Sang Toy born May 14, 1932 in Canton province, China passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 7th, 2024 at Windsor Regional Hospital-Ouellette Campus at the age of 92 after developing pneumonia.

After leaving his village at the age of 14 for Hong Kong to support his family, he immigrated to Canada landing in Vancouver on route to Calgary on December 10, 1955 at the age of 23. On June 14, 1956 he traveled to Windsor, Ontario via train landing at the foot of Riverside Drive and Goyeau Street with debt to repay and language as an obstacle. He overcame these challenges through heart, desire and hard work to provide opportunities for a better life for himself and his future family. Windsor is where he worked, married, raised his family and eventually retired. Ironically he last resided comfortably directly across from the same Spirit of Windsor Engine 5588 Steam Locomotive train on public display in Dieppe Gardens where he originally arrived.

Through his relentless work ethic he spent 34 years of his career working at the Rendezvous Tavern spending the last 29 years as the head chef. He gave back to the Chinese community by providing similar opportunities to immigrants starting a new life in Canada.

He led by quiet confidence and humbleness. He would not and did not seek out recognition. His biggest personal pride was seeing and hearing the successes of his children and grandchildren (who fondly called him Yeh Yeh). He measured success as experiences and opportunities that he didn’t have.

Man Sang Toy, son of Mr and Mrs King Sue Lee, is survived by his wife, Bo Chu Toy, of 58 years, three children, Tony, Shirly (Myron) and Henry (Silvana), sister, Cai Changui, and grandchildren, Hannah, Sarah and Olivia (Henry).

He was wise beyond his years and always led by example. He provided his family the opportunities that he did not have himself to which we will never be able to repay, but will forever remember.
