It is with sadness that the family of Doreen Mary O'Brien (1934) announces her passing on August 25 in Windsor, Ontario in her 88th year. Doreen was the daughter of Lt. Col. D.C. O'Brien and Margaret O'Brien (Houze). Doreen is predeceased by her two sisters, Patricia Osborne (2013) and Shirley Ross (2004), nephew Craig Ross (1976) and niece Jennifer Voss (2016). She is survived by nephews Gerald (Jan) Ross, Brien (Laurie) Ross and Jan (Jennifer) Voss, and nieces Kelly Muirhead and Laura (Trevor) Selanders, and many great nieces and nephews.
Doreen was an elementary school teacher for 35 years, first in Germany teaching at the Canadian Armed Forces Base, and then spent the rest of her career in the Essex Public School system. This career choice allowed her to fulfil her second love, which was travelling. She visited nearly every country in the world, many more than once.
Once retired, she picked up music, playing trumpet in a band, bells in a choir and enjoyed clogging. She was a dedicated volunteer for the Canadian Red Cross and Windsor Essex Hospice in her retirement. Doreen was awarded the Order of the Red Cross for her volunteerism and her disaster relief work (6 American tours, 1 international tour, and 4 Canadian tours)
Her spunk and spirit, dogged determination to see the brightness always, and her commitment to community, will be missed by her many friends and family.
The family has opted to honour Doreen in a private graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of Windsor & Essex County, the Canadian Red Cross or the charity of your choice, would be most appreciated.
