Uncle Walter was so kind to his nieces and nephews,looking after us and entertaining us during our long summer visits to the farm. Among other memories, he took us to movies, played Monopoly with us and took us blackberry-picking. I remember begging him once to take me to pick on a hot, mosquito infested afternoon and he did even though he had other things to do. He and Aunt Shadie always went far beyond the call of duty to make us happy. They were great role-models for kindness and generosity...and fun! I will never forget them.

Pa was the best grandfather a girl could ask for. I remember as a child, Pa would constantly quiz me on spelling words, progressively giving me harder ones but try as he would, I was not easily stumped.  He would also ask me if I had a boyfriend every time I saw him (this probably started from age 6 onwards) and it always made me laugh. He also use to take my brothers and I to "town" in his Mercury and treat us to hamburgers. I practically grew-up at his house and the memories of playing in the back bedroom, out by the shed or at the pond are endless. Perhaps my favorite memory is when Pa kept me for a weekend when I was about 10 as my parents went out of town. He took me to the Mayfield creamery, took me swimming at a neighborhood pool, and helped me to build a redneck basketball hoop ( a board with a spray-painted square and laundry basket with the bottom cut out). That was my idea but he was gung-ho to help me with it and nailed it to a tree in his yard. I am going to miss him terribly but I can't wait to share my memories with my son as he grows older about his amazing great grandpa!

Uncle Walter was a gift of joy to our family.  He always had the ability to lift everyone's spirit in his own unique way.

I remember my Uncle Walter as a tall, handsome, commanding presence in my young life, full of laughter and fun, stories and folklore. He loved telling us children how the boulders in the road cuts were the roots of Stone Mountain, or how the Bull Roarer roamed the woods near the farm. He would take us to the store to get candy and colas, let us ride on the farm wagon, and jump in the oats in the shed (not recommended; we itched for hours). He entered Mama's and Papa's  house every morning with a song or whistling a tune, just like a cheerful bird announcing his presence.  He was unfailing in civility and hospitality towards all, and he loved his family deeply.  We will all remember him with love.

I will always hold Uncle Walter and my memories of our time together close to my heart! He is so special to me. I can't begin to count the times he made me laugh! Claire

We are beyond blessed to have been able to call this man "Pa". He was always the life of the party with all his jokes. No matter how many times he told them, they would still make you chuckle. 
And how many people can say that their 90 year old grandpa took them off roading  In a grand marquis to see the beautiful sunflowers planted across the road!  
We will greatly miss you Pa! We Love You so much.

Shadie and Walter Perry were my brother's "in-laws", but they were also family to all of us.  When they welcomed John into their family, they welcomed not just him, but his entire family.  Although I didn't get there often, I always felt like I was home each time we visited them.  Mr. Perry was a wonderful and strong man and I am proud to have known him.  His love for his family was so obvious and would lighten the heart of all those who were privileged to see it.  He will be greatly missed!

I am fortunate to be able to call Walter Perry my grandfather. He was a great man and was always the life of the party. I will never forget his saying when you had bad luck hunting or fishing. Pa would always say " you're weren't  holding your mouth right." If I asked  what the right way was, I'd always get a funny face

"Pa" was one of my favorite people on this earth. Just to mention a few, he was: funny, thoughtful, generous, dependable, understanding and honest. He was a perfect southern gentleman. I can't imagine having a better grandfather. I'll never forget sitting in his swing under the great oak trees listening to his stories, counting cars, feeding the squirrels, shooting the squirrels, laughing at the same jokes, waiting until it was time to go to the deer stand or golden coral. And he alway told me I was "looking good".

I'm a neighbor of Walter's and so glad I got to know him through Hazel Still.  Loved the stories of their childhood, their path they walked between their homes, and how they stayed such close friends for so long. Several years ago he gave me and Hazel a tour of his birthplace before the home sold...the stories he told were priceless!  

Our neighborhood has just lost a very distinguished, kind and funny man! I will miss him!!

We love you so much pa, enjoyed all of your wonderful stories, and the sweet time you spent with us. I especially really enjoyed or conversations about Southern expressions  Especially when you asked me about "How'd I'd found my family?" And my reply being "Well I found them at home in Kansas City?" I've learned a lot more expressions since then and believe when I see you in heaven we will understand each other a lot better and have some really wonderful conversations. To include when you ask me "how'd you find your family?" Again my reply will be that "they are doing well and have grown to be absolutely, wonderful, successful, respectable adults." We miss you pa.

Fond memories of summer visits to 
Aunt Ruths house, Snappin Turtles in a bucket, Pickin Cotton, just enough to be able to say I did.  Walter always came to pay respects when my Aunts and Uncles passed. Loved to share hunting stories with him. I know he will be missed dearly.

Chip and I are so sorry to hear of Walter's passing. His service was over before we even knew it was scheduled. I am so sorry that I was not there to show my respects. He was always such a fine gentleman. Being named "Shadie", I have always had a closeness with Walter. He always had a hug for me. Thinking of all of you.
