My wish for the family of Lottie is that this year has been filled with happy, pleasant and "funny" memories of a great lady. I'm sure she has left you with an abundant supply.

Oh, the mourning and the memories since we all learned of Lottie’s death…
First, I am forever grateful to Lottie for being such a kind, loving, and fun friend to my Mother after they met at Duke Street Baptist Church in the early 1950s.  God bless her  especially for driving  seven hours with her own youngest children to help  Mom with my newborn sister. We had moved out of state and it always a good day for Mom whenever a letter or a tape recorded message came from Lottie, but the best times were when you all came and stayed for awhile.  After eight years of living in various northern cities  we moved back to Alexandria and Lottie helped ease us back into a (relatively) Southern life. Her visits included tips on where best to shop, how to hem my dresses and how to house break  our new puppy,  interspersed with our killer belly laughs over Lottie’s take on life. In 2004 Mom came off of three months of dialysis and was going out to dinner to celebrate her birthday after a long grueling stint in the hospital, and yet the highlight of her day was that Lottie and Jimmy were in town and they were coming to visit her! 
From being my Sunday School teacher when I was a preschooler, to leading  groups at that helped usher me into adult- and parenthood, Lottie was a mentor of my religious and spiritual life at Duke Street Baptist Church.  I owe so much to the wisdom and can-do attitude that Lottie imparted. 
I have condensed the Howards’ and Bakers’ story but those of us who lived it know  it was the best friendship in the world!  And at its core was and still is, Lottie, who loved greatly and is loved immensely. 
I pray you all will feel and embrace the peace and comfort of our Lord.

One of my earliest and fondest memories of Lottie goes back more than 60 years.  I was 9 years old and my grandfather, Ivy, had just died, my first close encounter with death.  I knew that his death had shaken my family and I certainly felt the power of that loss in a profound way.  After the funeral Lottie volunteered to take Phil and I back home to Virginia with her and Carlton.  I don't remember who else was in the car with us, but  Lottie's indomitable good humor, her steadfast faith , and her unfailing positivity  eased my feelings of loss and disorientation.  She had that kind of presence from which a 9 year old grieving boy could feel that things may well be okay again in the future.   Lottie seemed to always have that effect on me when I was a child and I remember that aspect of her character most fondly these many years later.  

I must admit that I have been late in paying tribute to Ms. Howard because it is hard to believe this wonderfully vibrant woman has left us.  I was a caregiver for her and Jimmy for several months.  At first, I was impressed with how well she utilized my services -- changing beds, dusting, vacuuming,driving her to the eye doctor, going to the grocery (how was I to know she wrote her list on both sides of the paper!) Over. time, these small chores took less time and we were able to sit and chat.  I  heard her remember so fondly her growing up, and how she met Jimmy, and, with great pride, describing her children and grandchildren.  We would bemoan the state of American politics (being a liberal Democrat, like she) and admire her tomatoes on her back porch. She was a woman of intelligence with a big heart.  I am so sorry for Jimmy, whose heart must be breaking, and for the rest of her family.  She will be sorely missed.

I’ll be forever grateful to Lottie. When my father passed away she came to his house and fixed blueberry pancakes for everyone. She had a calming effect when we really needed it.  There are so many memories of our families together and I’ll hold them in my heart forever.  

Every time in my life includes a wonderful memory of Aunt Lottie and Uncle Jimmy. They were there from the beginning bringing love and laughter with them. They came together sort of like peanut butter and jelly.

However, on her own Lottie was a fearless adventurer and I'm sure the impetus for the amazing travels she shared with Jimmy. She was undaunted by any barriers and was victorious over many on her journey through life. Her faith and unfailing courage saw her through to the end and now she is reaping her reward.

I would give a king's ransome for one more of her warm hugs but will wait for awhile till we see each other again.

My favorite memories of Lottie Howard were as one of the neighborhood mothers. Back in the 50’s-60’s we roamed the quiet streets traveling from home to home where we would play. One summer, we spent weeks playing Monopoly in the Howard’s basement. “neighborhood mother Lottie” was so welcoming.  She even rented the movie The Bridge Over the River Kwai to see.
As this was long before videos, it had to be shown on one of those old projectors. She handled it all so we could be entertained. 
I can’t recall a time where she would discipline or admonish one of us. It was understood that all the parents should act in this role in the absence of a child’s parent. She quietly spoke to us instead. As I remember, she was a great therapeutic communicator long before I knew what that was!
I will forever think of her as a mother who raised awesome kids and as a dear wife to husband, Jimmie.

Lottie  was  truly a blessing to the Howards, one  and all.     I will cherish the  memory of her laughter and  smiles.

So many memories of Aunt Lottie and most of them involve being around a "mess of other Howards" at family reunions or gatherings. Early in my life up in Northern Virginia under a park pavilion perhaps being told to stay out of the desserts until we'd eaten. Then later in life down in North Carolina and virtually, being praised for creating and bringing a dessert, which might have met muster with some of the other family cooks which is as much as one could want to attain. All of my memories sweet, all cherished. I love you and this family deeply. Thank you for sharing with me and mine in your life. I'm humbled and honored.
