Johnnie "Matt" Bryant

Johnnie Mathew Bryant, III “Matt” of Wilmington, NC was born on December 3, 1954 to beloved parents Johnnie Matthew Bryant, Jr. and Mary “Bebe” Maples Bryant who he was reunited with in heaven on October 10, 2018.

Matt’s first job was cleaning units at his grandmother’s beach rental property the “Barbee Apartments” at Wrightsville Beach. Matt was passionate about music from an early age, and his dream job was to become a professional musician. The first song he learned to play on the guitar at the age of 6 was “If I Were A Carpenter” by Bobby Darin.

After attending New Hanover High School, he served in the United States Navy, following in his father‘s footsteps. From 1972 through 1976 Matt worked in Naval Intelligence and was a member of the elite Presidential Ceremonial Guard.

After leaving the Navy, he began his career as a safety and operations manager for several large corporations and played a vital part in the startup of numerous successful businesses. Matt took pride in his work just as he did with all that he set his mind to. Although he was proud of his career, he considered his biggest accomplishment as having the title of Daddio and Papa.

He was a Mopar enthusiast who loved many cars during his lifetime especially his first car, a ’66 Dodge Charger and ’74 custom Dodge Braggin Wagon aka the “Grave Digger” van. Matt was a weather nerd who put Jim Cantore to shame with his hurricane tracking abilities. He loved spending time by the ocean whether it be on his boat or on the north end of Carolina Beach watching the sunset.

He was in many bands throughout his lifetime, and loved his jam sessions. Matt shared his passion for music with many, including his daughters, Jennifer and Amy, and beloved nephews, Lane and Tommy Tester.

He is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Whitt and Amy Bryant. His siblings, Deborah Bryant Hartley (Bill), Brian Bryant (Miranda), Traci Bryant Lewis (Benjamin), and his precious Granddaughters, Serenity and Faith Whitt.

He also leaves behind his loyal best friends: “Diaper Buddy” Barbie Dobo and his furry companion “Roxie”.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2pm on Saturday, October 20, 2018, with a visitation one hour prior at Coble Ward Smith 3915 Oleander Dr, Wilmington, NC 28403. Matt’s family wishes to express their deep appreciation, and sincerely thank everyone for their kind expressions of sympathy. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The American Heart Association.
