He was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on September 19, 1942, the son of Robert E. Travis and Margaret Bohigian Travis.
He attended Jackson High School in Miami, Florida where he played football and ran track. Following graduation, Jack was recruited by Colorado State University to play collegiate football. He transferred to Lakeland College for academic purposes and continued to play football as a linebacker and guard. When it came to football, he had incredible speed making him unstoppable as very few could keep up. His social life included being Homecoming King, on Winter Carnival Court, and a member of Mu Lambda Sigma Fraternity. Upon his graduation in 1968, he become a pharmaceutical sales representative and advanced all the way to become the National Sales Manager. Eventually, he went on to start his own company.
He raised his family in Wake Forest, NC where he was an active member of the Rotary Club and the July 4th Committee. He had a love for history and a compelling interest in the Civil War. As a hobby he did Civil War reenacting and started “Longstreet Corps” artillery battery.
In his retired life, he authored two non-fiction books, “Men of God, Angels of Death” and “Rebel Gunner”. He gave presentations to numerous historical groups throughout the Southeast and served on the Board of Directors for the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society and the Federal Point Historical Society.
Jack is survived by daughter Jessica, son Jarret, son Marc and his mother. He will be greatly missed and remembered by the many people he touched throughout his life.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, May 7, 2013 from 5:30pm-6:30pm followed by a Trisagion (Prayer) at 6:30pm at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 608 S College Rd, Wilmington, NC 28403, (910) 392-4444
