After graduating with highest honors from Mckeesport Senior High School in 1965, Gail attended the Pennsylvania State University where she graduated cum laude in 1969. It was at Penn State where Gail met the love of her life and married on August 10, 1969. They had been married for 55 years.
Gail was preceded in death by her parents Evelyn and Morris Chotiner and is survived by her husband, Howard, son, Kevin, daughter Kimberly, and grandson, Sammy.
Gail and Howard moved to Charlottesville, Va in 1969 where she taught elementary education for 3 years. Gail got her master’s degree with honors from the University of Virginia in 1973.
1973-1974 was spent in Bloomfield, Connecticut where Howard did his post doctoral internship (psychology) and Gail worked as a guidance counselor. The last move was to Wilmington, NC in August 1974.
Gail was a lifetime member of Hadassah, National Educational Association (NEA), The Pennsylvania State University and the University of Virginia alumni associations.
She was a counselor at Noble Junior High School and Laney High School where she also coached the Laney Girls’ Tennis team for 6 years when she took a losing team in the first 2 years to conference champions the last 4 years. She was the Mideastern High School Coach of the year 3 times.
In addition, she was a member of B’Nai Israel synagogue and its sisterhood and a member of the USTA (United States Tennis Association).
Gail had been a tennis coach for men in 1994 where the team lost in the finals of sectionals. Gail was also an avid tennis player and captain of many teams in Wilmington.
Gail was inducted into the Laney Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019.
Gail had a heart of gold and was a genuine person. People who knew her well loved her and knew she was an exceptional human being. She will be missed.
The funeral Service will be held at 2 pm on November 10, 2024 at the B'Nai Israel Synagogue, 2601 Chestnut St. Wilmington, NC. 28405 with Rabbi Chaya Bender officiating. Burial to follow at B'Nai Israel Hebrew Cemetery, 307 N. 18th St. Wilmington, NC.
