Sandra Lee Strick Mandell, age 84, passed away peacefully at home Friday, December 20, 2024. Sandy was truly beloved by every human she touched. She shared her love, strong spirit and abundant generosity with her family, who she cherished above all else. Sandra shared her life for 60 years with her beloved husband, the late Howard “Butch” Mandell. Together they raised their 4 children, Marci Barth (Gary), Michael (Emily), Richard (Ana), Robert (Janet). Sandy was Nonnie to her 14 grandchildren: Mackenzie, Kirby, Dylan, Taylor, Nick, Nolan, Jonathan, Mac, Joey, Mason, Bryce, Colton, Payton and Marlee. Over the years she cared for her many German Shepherd dogs, but she loved none more than her constant, loyal companion, a white Maltese named Dusty.
Sandy was born and raised in Gary, Indiana with her brother Jerry (Margie) and parents, the late David and Frances Strick. Butch and Sandy raised their children in Skokie, Illinois. Once the nest was empty, they moved to downtown Chicago, where they enjoyed many happy years taking in all the excitement the city had to offer: theater, restaurants, sporting events, shopping. Butch and Sandy later moved to Highland Park to be closer to family. After Butch’s passing, Sandy bravely moved into the Vi in Glenview where she quickly made many dear friends. Sandy was a woman who brightened everyone’s day. Her kindness and fun-loving spirit lit up every room she entered. In her younger years, Sandy perfected her baton twirling skills at Horace Mann High School. After college at Indiana University, she worked as a secretary in Chicago. She enjoyed playing raquet ball and golf, she made magnificent needlepoint masterpieces. Mahjong and rummikub were among her favorite games. Sandy was most proud of the home she and Butch built in New Buffalo, Michigan named Mandevilla. They designed the home as a refuge for the entire family to enjoy summers on the beach. This home became a place for family togetherness and memory-making for 3 generations. It created a closeness where cousins grew up together and shared special bonds. Sandy/Mom/Nonnie will be deeply missed by all. May her memory be a blessing
