Philip was born on March 13, 1943, on U.S. Army base Fort Leonard Wood near Lebanon, Missouri, to Elmer Gordon Holm, Jr. and Gertrude Lorraine Anderson.
In 1951, his family settled in Evanston, Illinois, where Philip attended Noyes Elementary School, Haven Middle School, and Evanston Township High School. He earned a B.S. in Physical Education and Speech Communications from Ripon College, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, then received an M.S. in Kinesiology from Indiana University.
Philip was later inducted into the ETHS Athletic Hall of Fame as offensive center in their undefeated 1960 state championship football team, as well as induction into Ripon College’s Athletic Hall of Fame for football and for winning the conference golf championship. He won multiple golf championships at Westmoreland Country Club, while also setting the course record.
In 1972, Philip married Cheryl Louise Deal, with whom he shared 52 years of marriage.
Professionally, Philip succeeded his father as president of the glassware company Monogram of Evanston and spent much of his spare time golfing, gardening, and giving community support to both ETHS and Northwestern University’s athletic programs. The consummate coach, Phil always offered the gentlest of encouragement to his three sons Olen, Erik, and Anders in both their athletic endeavors and throughout their lives.
Philip's kind spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl, his children Olen (William Mellette), Erik (Sarah Ferraro), and Anders (Emma Nesper), and his grandchildren Arne, Hayden, Odin, and Cameron, who loved "Papa" dearly. He is also survived by his sister Julie (Rev. Robert Stuenkel) and many cousins and family members.
A celebration of life service will be planned for a later date.
Contributions can be made to The Alzheimer’s Association in Philip's memory.
