Arthur Pancoe

Arthur Pancoe was born in Chicago on October 23, 1925, the fourth child of Morris Pancoe and Florence Lidsky. He lived the first 90 years of his life on the north shore, attending public schools, the University of Wisconsin and Northwestern University, where he earned a masters in mathematics. Art enlisted in the Navy in 1944, serving in the Pacific arena as an Ensign, transporting gunpowder and oil through enemy waters, a sitting duck on his slow moving ship. When he returned home, Art joined Standard Stationery, the family business, and taught mathematics to returning veterans. He married his beloved life partner and wife of sixty-two years, Gladys (Hap) Lipschultz in 1947. They had two children, Mariann and Michael. In his mid-forties, Art left a secure career in manufacturing to become a stockbroker. He went from cold-calling at Smith Barney, to being profiled by Money & Fortune magazines for his stock picking prowess in the biotech sector. Art never retired, ending his career as a Senior Vice President at Morgan Stanley. To say that Art lived and breathed stocks wouldn’t be an understatement. It wasn’t what he did, it was who he was. Art also lived and breathed Northwestern, as a student, a teacher, a director and a lifelong Wildcats fan. In 2003 he received the Alumni Medal, the alumni association’s highest honor, for his philanthropic endeavors. He will be remembered as a philanthropic and energetic man, who believed in giving back to his community through service on many boards. He was never happier than when he was fishing on Lake Geneva or skiing at Vail.

Art was predeceased by his parents, Morris and Florence Pancoe, his brother Earl, his sisters Lenore and Shirley and his grand-daughter Beth. He is survived by his brother Walter of Wilmington, NC; children Mariann Pancoe of Vero Beach, FL and Michael Pancoe of Mount Desert, Maine; his daughter-in-law Ellie; three grandchildren – Julia, Hannah and Alex (& wife Nina) and one great-grandchild, Zephyr; also many nieces, nephews and their families, and his best friend Henry Bienen. Art also will be missed by all of his communities: his hometown of Glencoe, IL, his synagogue at North Shore Congregation Israel, his team at Morgan Stanley, with whom he worked for over forty years, his Northwestern family and his buddies at Harry’s Delicatessen, where he held court giving stock advice for years. Our family especially wishes to thank Art’s caretaker Risa Andrade, who became ‘family of the heart’ for her devotion to Art’s wellbeing these past six years.

A celebration of life will be held in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, donations in Art’s memory can be made to the Lurie Cancer Center.
