Alfred “Hacky” Ernest Hackbarth, Jr, age 85, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. Beloved husband for 48 years of the late Katherine P. Hackbarth: devoted father of Katherine “Kate” (Greg) Rekett and Alfred (Megan) E. Hackbarth, III; proud grandfather of Elizabeth “Liza” and Reed Rekett; William, Harrison, and Lily Hackbarth; son of the late Alice and Alfred E. Hackbarth; brother of Philip Hackbarth; uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. He was a graduate of New Trier High School (1948) and Yale University (1952) with a B.S. degree in Engineering and was an active member in the ROTC. After graduating from Yale, he served two years in the United States Navy reaching the rank of Lieutenant. After completing his service he attended the Northwestern School of Law (1957) (JD), while also completing his accreditation as a CPA. He briefly joined Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP before joining Arthur Andersen & Co. where he had a distinguished career as a Tax Partner, retiring in 1988 to form Hackbarth & Hudson P.C. He served on the board of Heritage Bank (Arizona), the Uptown National Bank and Bridgeview Bank (Chicago). He was a director of the Allendale Association and was an active member of Yale Club of Chicago Foundation, serving as a director and treasurer. He was actively involved as a long-time member of several business and social clubs in Chicago as well as a member of the Bohemian Club (San Francisco). He loved life, whether it was playing golf, watching his kids and grandkids, or enjoying a good cigar, he did it all with an infectious smile. A celebration of Hacky’s life will take place on Friday, December 9, 2016, from 5:30 to 8pm at Glen View Club, 100 Golf Rd., Golf, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Henry Pope Foundation, 20 North Wacker Drive, Suite 1520, Chicago, IL 60606. Interment at the Glencoe Union Church will be private.
