Alan A. Moss, 75, of Highland Park, passed suddenly on September 8, 2023. Alan was born October 31, 1947 to Hannah and Bertram Moss, and raised in Chicago and Winnetka. He graduated from New Trier High School and went on to the University of Wisconsin, where he earned both his B.S. and M.F.A. in painting and printmaking. In a long career in the arts and design, he ran the Dittmar Gallery and Craft Studio at Northwestern University, led architecture tours in Chicago, was an art buyer for the Bradford Exchange, and taught art history at the College of Lake County for many years. His art was exhibited in many Chicago galleries and national art shows. He drew all the pen-and-ink artwork for the American Science and Surplus catalogs for nearly 30 years. Alan also, with his wife, founded and ran Moss Visual Services, an independent art and design business. He was well known and liked among his contemporaries. He never stopped drawing and painting, telling jokes and regaling the room with stories.
Alan was the beloved husband for 51+ years of Mary Moss, nee Sturzl; dedicated and loving father of Morgan and Duncan; devoted brother to Carol Moss Front, and brother-in-law to Steve Sturzl (Cora), Chris Sturzl (Sue), Brian Sturzl (Deb), and Celia Sturzl (David). He was preceded in death by his parents and lifelong friend, Estelle Frazier, who helped raise Alan. He will be missed also by many nieces and nephews who loved and looked up to him, and a wide circle of devoted friends and neighbors. Alan included all of the many pets along with his family in his yearly hand-drawn and hilarious holiday cards.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 20, 10:00 AM at Weinstein & Piser Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Alan’s name to his former stomping ground, the Dittmar Gallery in the Norris Center at Northwestern University. Contact Debra Blade at [email protected] for more information on donations.
