It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Phylis Anne Floyd, aged 72, who left this world on December 13, 2024 in East Lansing, Michigan. Born on October 26, 1952 in Detroit, Phylis was a beloved daughter of Henry Winship Floyd and Odile Therese Marlio. She was preceded in death by her sister Sharen Bernadette Floyd, her brother John Marino and survived by her sister Carol Floyd and Suzanne Lindbert.
Phylis was an extraordinary woman whose life was marked by love, compassion, and resilience. As a devoted mother to her son, James Neal Lawton, and his wife, Haleigh, she imparted a sense of strength and kindness that has been passed down through generations. Her heart expanded beyond her role as a mother when she embraced her stepchildren, Jeffery (Mary, div., Courtney and Kira), Noah (Erin), and Benjamin (Beth) Lawton. Phylis found joy and fulfillment in her relationships with her eight step-grandchildren, for whom she held a special place in her heart.
Those who knew Phylis will remember her generous spirit, hearty laughter, and unwavering support. She had an innate ability to lift the spirits of those around her, and her warm smile could light up a room. Phylis cherished family gatherings, often encircled by her loved ones, sharing stories, wisdom, and laughter long into the night.
As we celebrate Phylis' life, we remember the countless memories, lessons of love and kindness as well as the immeasurable impact she had on all who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue to thrive within her family and community.
Phylis excelled in her high school and earned her PhD in Art History (after a yearlong research study in Paris) from the University of Michigan. It was there that her passion for art blossomed into an illustrious academic career. She shared her expertise and love for art at MSU as a tenured professor, inspiring countless students with her knowledge, creativity, and infectious enthusiasm. Her contributions to the field extended beyond the classroom, extended into her assertiveness and book publications, earning her opportunities to present her work internationally, thereby sharing her passion with the world. Beyond her professional achievements, Phylis was a woman of deep convictions and a generous spirit. She loved animals and advocated for their welfare, embodying kindness in every aspect of her life. Phylis was also committed to making eco-conscious choices, passionately focusing on protecting the planet.
Her legacy lives on through the profound impact she made on her students and the lives of those fortunate enough to know her. Phylis' warmth, kindness, and unwavering support will be cherished and remembered by her family and friends.

Phylis will be laid to rest in the Green Burial section of Summit Cemetery in Williamston, MI on Friday, December 20, 2024 at 1:00pm to reflect her values and dedication to environmental conservation.
A memorial service to honor Phylis’ life will be held at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes on Sunday, December 22, 2024 from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M, 205 E Middle St Williamston, Michigan 48895 where friends and family are invited to gather and share their stories and remembrance of a truly remarkable woman.
