Ron was a warm and caring person, beloved by his family and friends. He grew up in Winchester, Virginia, where he had fond summer memories of riding his bike to meet his buddies at the baseball field. Ron attended John Handley High School where he was voted Best All Around by the class of 1964. He attended St. Andrews College in North Carolina until leaving to serve in the Army in the Vietnam War where he worked in radio broadcasting. After his service, Ron continued working in radio and made good friends with whom he enjoyed reconnecting in retirement. He eventually returned to Winchester where he started a family and began a career as an independent insurance agent.
The greatest joy in Ron’s life was being a husband, father, and grandfather. He was always present for his family, in the big moments and the small ones. They moved to Williamsburg in 1989 where he worked at the Brooks Agency. Though Ron jokingly referred to himself as “the Great Indoorsman,” he loved playing golf with his family and golfing buddies Jake and Wes, with whom he made two (!) holes-in-one. Ron was an avid reader with a special interest in American history and biographies. He and his family spent holidays together every year at their home and many beautiful summer vacations in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Ron is survived by his wife of forty-three years, Nancy, whom he completely adored and who cared for him with deep devotion. He is also survived by his daughter, Karen (Don); sons, Ron (Rebecca) and Andrew; as well his grandchildren Aiden, Ryan, and Lauren; his dear sister, Carol and brother in-law Fred (niece Beth); his large and loving family of in-laws in West Virginia; and his stepmother, Marguerite. His family would also like to mention Jasmine and Marsha for supporting Ron’s family with caregiving and bringing smiles to his day.
Friends are welcome to join Ron’s family for a visitation between 10:00am and 12:00pm on Saturday, September 23, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, Virginia.
