Commander Roger L. Baldwin, USN, Ret., of Williamsburg, passed away on April 28, 2022 surrounded by loving family. He was born in Utica, New York on February 5, 1934, the son of Howard and Hazel Baldwin.
In 1957, Roger married Beverly, his childhood sweetheart, graduated from Cornell University with a BS in Metallurgical Engineering, and was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Navy – all within just three days. Roger was selected for the Nuclear Power Training Program and was assigned to various ships, including the USS Enterprise. Roger taught at the Navy Nuclear Power Training Unit and served as an executive officer on ships in support of Vietnam operations.
Roger retired after 22 years of decorated naval service and found a second career with VEPCO (Dominion Energy). At Surry Nuclear Station, he worked in administrative services and nuclear training. He continued in nuclear training at Dominion's headquarters in Richmond before his 1992 retirement after 14 years with the company.
Roger was a founding member of the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists Church, holding many leadership roles during his 34 years of service. He was also an active volunteer with the Williamsburg Chapter and Mid-Atlantic Region of the American Red Cross.
Both Roger and Beverly shared a love of singing (barbershop and choral), travelling to visit extended family and Star Island, and spending time with immediate family. Roger was also an avid stamp collector and model train enthusiast.
Roger was preceded in death by parents, Howard and Hazel Baldwin; his wife, Beverly; brother-in-law, Gary Evans; sister-in-law, Suzanne Evans; and grandson, Christopher Curfman.
Roger is survived by three children and their spouses, Cathy (Larry) Curfman of Glen Allen; Kevin (Cetta) Baldwin of Norfolk; Scott (Donna) Baldwin of Hampton; five grandchildren to include, Elizabeth Curfman, Jennifer (Jasen) Eastwood, Alexander Curfman, Satch Baldwin, Shannon Baldwin; and great-grandson, Noah Eastwood.
A memorial service will be held at Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists on Sunday, May 22 at 2:00 PM.
