Michael Driscoll Maddocks

He is survived by his wife, Debbie and daughter, Morgan, of Williamsburg, cousins Peter D. Maddocks of New York City and Valerie Maddocks of Great Barrington, MA. Mike is predeceased by his parents, CAPT William John Maddocks, USN, Retired and Dana Schaefer Maddocks and his sister Pamela M. Gurley.

Mike graduated from his beloved Walsingham Academy in 1975 and Washington and Lee University in 1979. That summer he attended Officer Candidate School in Newport RI where he received his commission as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. Here he became a Charter Member of the 3 Macs. He attended Surface Warfare Officers School in Newport, RI and served in USS John King (DDG-3) as the Gunnery Officer homeported in Norfolk. Upon completion of active duty, Mike continued his service to our country as a Naval Reserve intelligence officer until his retirement in 2005 at the rank of Captain.

Mike’s 30-year career in banking, focused on private banking, trusts and wealth management, began in Washington, DC and ended in his hometown of Williamsburg. Here, his professional capstones were the establishment of Middleburg Bank’s regional headquarters where he served as its community executive until his retirement. In 2017 he, as quoted by Bill Carr, came out of retirement “to help stand up Village Bank’s de novo presence in Williamsburg.” In 2019 Mike retired from Village Bank.

This gave him the time to pursue all the things that he genuinely loved and enjoyed which brought him countless hours of happiness and good times. To name a few, the Barn at Goose Hill with his horses and chickens and barn cats. He took great pleasure in giving away fresh eggs as he knew it would always bring a smile to the recipient’s face. It was here that he earned the nickname Chicken Mike. Fox hunting with his daughter Morgan and members of the Princess Anne Hunt at some of the most beautiful historic countryside and farmlands around. In 2018 he received his colors from the hunt, and this was without question one of his proudest accomplishments. Mike was an excellent sailor, and he was as comfortable on the water as walking on land; it was in his blood. Helming “Beyond the Shore” on the Mother York (his nickname for the York River) with his extraordinary friend and owner of the boat, Ken. He never tired of being at the helm and the peaceful hours he spent on the water.

His life ended much too soon but he managed to do a great deal of living in his 63 years. Fair winds and following seas, ride to the hounds.

Mike was a member of St. Bede Catholic Church. He was devoted to serving his hometown and its community organizations, many of which he headed.

A private graveside service will be held at Cedar Grove Cemetery and a celebration of Mike’s life will be held at a later date. Nelsen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
