On the afternoon of May 3, 2019, Hazel Elizabeth Sych peacefully passed from this life at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest George Sych, Sr., and her parents, Isom and Georgia Hamrick, as well as her granddaughter, Shelly Marie Sych. Many in this life will cherish their memories of this remarkable woman, including her daughter, Victoria Dawn Toupin and her husband Michael; her sons, Ernest George Sych, Jr. and his wife Sue, and Joseph Eric Sych and his wife Lisa; her grandchildren, Dawn, Scott, Amy, Justin, Lydia, Eric, Emmy, Noah and Anthony, as well as great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and friends old and new.
She was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina on November 24, 1924 and grew up there on her family’s farm. She moved to Williamsburg, Virginia in the late 1930s where she met her husband, then in service with the United States Marine Corps. They married in September 1941, just months before the entry of the United States into the Second World War following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. After the conclusion of the war, they settled in Williamsburg, eventually building a house on Ironbound Road. There she and her husband raised three children, worked hard, and built many memories for family and friends. She was an active and enthusiastic member of James River Baptist Church until she was no longer physically able to attend services several years ago. Over the years she worked as a telephone operator at the telephone company, Eastern State Hospital, the College of William and Mary, and United Virginia Bank.
Visitation will take place at the Nelsen Funeral Home at 3785 Strawberry Plains Road in Williamsburg, Virginia at 10:00 on Tuesday, May 7, 2019, with a short service to follow at 11:00, also at Nelsen Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made as offerings to James River Baptist Church, where she spent many happy hours over the years.
