She passed away in her home in Ford’s Colony, Williamsburg, VA with her devoted husband of nine years by her side. Doreen fought a heroic seven year battle with cancer, during which she courageously sought to maximize her time with family and friends.
Doreen was born on March 8th, 1948 to Ramoth and Audrey Nolan. She grew up in Clifton, NJ and after graduating from High School went to Trenton State (now College of New Jersey) to earn her degree in Elementary Education. With her degree she taught elementary school in Clifton for 30 years before she retired and moved to Williamsburg, VA.
Doreen’s devotion to family and friends was admired by so many. She enjoyed entertaining family friends at her beach house in Sandbridge, Virginia. She could be found playing Scrabble, keeping up with the latest in decorating, reading fiction or the daily paper. Perhaps most importantly she loved the moments she had with her grandchildren and fostered a love for learning and life in them. She was a special person with immense kindness and generosity towards all those around her. She wished that those that knew her cherish the happy and healthy times in their hearts.
Doreen will be sorely missed by her loving husband, retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Bob Maiocco who she married in 2013 following the passing of her husband of 32 years, Walter Kahl. Also, she will be sorely missed by her mother, Audrey Nolan of Williamsburg VA, and brother Ray Nolan of Clifton, NJ; her daughter, Heather Manzo, of Ramsey, NJ, and husband Joseph and her two grandchildren Julie (9) and Jack (6); stepson David Maiocco of Ashville, NC; stepdaughter Amy St. Jean of Marlton, NJ and husband Jim and their four children, Ally (22), Belle (20), Lilly (18) and Elise (16), along with other nieces, nephews, family members, friends and neighbors.
The family wishes to extend its immense appreciation to Dr. David Powell whose kindness and extraordinary care gave Doreen many years of quality life And, a special thanks to Susan Hubbard, RN and the rest of the oncology nurses at the Virginia Oncology Associates for their support and loving care during these most difficult times. We would also like to express our gratitude to all our incredible family and friends, near and far, who helped in so many ways to lift us in our journey. We are forever grateful.
The family will receive friends on Monday, August 15th from 6:00-8:00pm at Nelsen Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held at St. Olaf, Tuesday, August 16th at 1:00pm. Interment in Arlington National Cemetery will be at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society in the name of Doreen Kahl.
