LTC Charles Gene Freeman (Ret.) of Williamsburg flew his last mission on May 30, 2013. Destination: heaven.
Chuck was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas on July 1, 1933, to Charles Ellis and Lillie Marie Freeman, who both preceded him in death. He graduated from Jonesboro High School and continued his education at Arkansas State University, where he enrolled in ROTC and received his bachelor’s degree in business.
Chuck served for over twenty years as a senior aviator in the United States Army Transportation Corps, completing two tours in Vietnam and serving also in France, Japan, Greenland and the Antarctic.
On December 10, 1958, Chuck married Marilynn Hendrix in Ft. Worth, Texas. After retirement, they settled in Virginia, making their home in Gloucester and then Newport News before finally settling in Williamsburg, which they both loved. In his spare time he enjoyed golfing, traveling and spending time with his bulldog, Tank.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Marilynn; daughters Jeanetta (Ron) Polenske of Lodi, California; Jana Bettge of Newport News; Betsy (Dan) Yeary of Richmond; and son Chuck Freeman of Newport News; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg on Tuesday, June 4 from 1:00 – 2:00 PM, with a memorial service officiated by Rev. Dr. Ron Wade following at 2:00 PM. Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and caregivers at the Hampton VA Medical Center for their loving care and their amazing neighbors on Tarpley’s Tavern Road for their continuous support.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association, Inc., 912 Killian Hill Rd SW, Lilburn, GA 30047.
