B. Stephen Bowmer, III, of Williamsburg, passed away on April 17, he was 77. Steve worked for the Post Office as a Mail Carrier for several years, and then he realized his dream and started his own business in 1959, Colonial Tire & Recapping, with his wife’s uncle, Ed Willi. Steve was President of the Virginia Tire Dealers and Retreaders Association. He retired from the tire business in 1989 and he and his wife, Judy traveled all over the country in their motorhome. He enjoyed spending time at the Outer Banks in NC. He and his wife spent the past 18 winters in Naples, FL at their lake front cottage in Crystal Lake. He loved the ROMEO Club, (Retired Old Men Eating Out), he enjoyed Bocci Ball, Wii Bowling and all the activities they offered. Steve was a member of the Williamsburg Lions Club for 52 years and in March of 2010 he received the Melvin Jones Award which was given in recognition of outstanding volunteer work within the community.
Steve was born August 4, 1936 in Lanexa, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents, B. Stephen Bowmer, Jr. and Arline Bowmer. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Judy Bowmer; two sons, Doug Bowmer, Ronnie Bowmer and one daughter, Debbie Garrett of Orlando, FL; daughter-in-law, Tanya Bowmer; sister-in-law Cynthia Peoples and her husband, Gordon of Chester, VA; brother-in-law, David Hinkson, UT; two granddaughters, Ashley Garrett, Melissa Garrett and her fiancé, Landon Paschal; and two grandsons, Brandon and Blake Bowmer.
Steve was a member of the Williamsburg United Methodist Church and served on several committees. He also worked for several years as Treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce.
Visitation will be at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, 23188, on Saturday, April 19, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00p.m. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, April 20 at Williamsburg United Methodist Church, 500 Jamestown Rd, Williamsburg, 23185.
