Robert (Bob) Klapprott, a trailblazer in aerospace engineering and a devoted family man, passed away on January 1, 2025, at the age of 97. Born in Keokuk, Iowa, on October 23, 1927, Bob’s extraordinary life was defined by his passion for aviation, his unwavering dedication to his craft, and his deep commitment to his family and community.
Bob’s fascination with flight began early. He served in the Civil Air Patrol before enlisting in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he pursued his dreams, earning a degree in Aerospace Engineering from Northrop University in 1949.
Throughout his career, Bob contributed to some of the most groundbreaking advancements in aviation history. He was a pivotal engineer on numerous iconic projects, including the Cessna T-37 jet trainer, the supersonic F-108 fighter, the B-70 bomber, the B-52 Stratofortress, and the F-111 supersonic fighter.
Bob’s most notable achievements came after joining Bill Lear in 1963. As Chief Design Engineer, he played a leading role in the creation of the revolutionary Learjet, a design that forever transformed private aviation. Among his many contributions, Bob pioneered the development of the high-altitude fuel pump, a critical innovation that remains standard in all jet aircraft today, leaving an enduring mark on the aviation industry.
Later in his career, Bob brought his expertise to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), where he participated in numerous crash investigations worldwide, earning global recognition for his invaluable contributions to aviation safety.
Bob’s love for flight extended far beyond his work. A licensed pilot since 1946, he flew a wide variety of aircraft, including jets, gliders, and even the Goodyear blimp. Never one to shy away from adventure, he once parasailed off a mountain in Colorado, a testament to the fearless and spirited life he lived.
While Bob’s career was remarkable, his true pride and joy came from the relationships he nurtured as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was a man whose humility made him approachable, whose wisdom guided those around him, and whose quick wit and infectious laughter brought joy to every gathering. Bob had a unique ability to connect with people of all ages and walks of life, leaving a lasting impression of kindness and warmth. His family finds great comfort in the outpouring of love, admiration, and heartfelt stories shared by those whose lives he touched so deeply.
He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Joan Klapprott; his son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Karla Klapprott; his daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Sheldon Coleman; and his daughter, Shari Klapprott, all of Wichita; his grandchildren, Christian Coleman, of Wichita, Cody Coleman, of Boston, Jenny Coleman Fuchs, of San Antonio, and Kristy Klapprott of Wichita.
