The family grew up on a farm in western Oklahoma, where they harvested watermelon and broomcorn. After WWII, Silas moved the family to Wichita, where he began work at Boeing and the boys attended school in Towanda. Ray graduated from Circle High School in 1969 and shortly after he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served during Vietnam as Crew Chief on the 335th Helicopter Assault Company until his honorable discharge in December of 1971.
On September 16, 1972, he married Donna I. Herring in Augusta, Kansas.
Ray had many careers throughout his lifetime and served in the Kansas National Guard for 10 years. He worked at Cessna in Wiring Department, Beech and later Boeing, both in the Parts Department. He also served as a Police Officer in Augusta. Ray worked at Intrust Bank as an appraiser, an Armor Guard, and Security. As a hobby he enjoyed real estate sales.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents; older brother, Larry Ross; aunt and uncle, Norman and Donna McLaren; mother-in-law, Iola Herring; and brother-in-law, Dale Herring.
Survivors include: wife of 50 years, Donna; twin brother, Dan and Gail Ross, of Lumberton, TX; their children, Karyn and husband, Chris Morrongiello, their children, Lilli and Julie, Bob and wife, Andrea Ross, their children, Raeden, Rory, and Rowen, Rocky and wife, Christina Ross, their child, R.J.; sister-in-law, Cindy Ross, of Wichita, her children, Kristy and husband, Bill Duggan, their children, Will and Kaci, Nikki and husband, Harley Teel, their children, Justin and Alexandra; brother-in-law, Leon and wife, Mary Kay Herring, their children, Katie and husband, Mickey Gaume, their children, Mac and Gigi, Donald and wife, Taylor Herring, Michael and wife, Traci Herring, their children, David and Maggie Jo.
Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 23, 2022 at Resthaven Mortuary, 11800 W. Highway 54, Wichita.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with American Heart Association.
