The world lost a wonderful person on June 1, 2017 with the passing of Mary Catherine Friedel Smith. Mary was born in Tucson, Arizona on February 14, 1939 to Francis Friedel and Anna Margaret Preisner. She joined five siblings in the home. Mary was educated at Wichita State University. On January 19, 1957 she married Robert Lee Smith at St. Anne's Church in Wichita, Kansas. Bob and Mary made their home in Wichita. The raised six children. Mary worked as an Office Manager in the Women's Study Department at Wichita State University. She belonged to the Red Hatters, Cessquaros Square Dance Club and Classics Square Dance Club. She enjoyed making quilts, playing scrabble, flower gardening and time with family. After retirement she enjoyed traveling with her husband Bob. She enjoyed having family gatherings at home for Mother's and Father's Day, Easter, Carving Pumpkins, birthdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Most recently Mary and Bob celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in January. Family was very important to Mary. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Loretta and son, Matthew. She is survived by husband, Robert of the home; sisters, Dorothy Bergant of San Diego, CA, Pauline Searcy of Auburn, WA; brothers, Leonard (Connie) Friedel of Wichita, Joe Friedel of Prague, OK; children, Steve of Derby, Alan (Melody) of Wichita, Mark of Wichita, Jason (Vicki) of Derby; daughter, Laura (Richard) Webb of Wichita. She had 13 grandchildren, Sarah (Jayson) Guengrich, Kevin Smith, David Smith, Kayla Smith, Hannah (Jared) Friman, Mackenzie Smith, Dalton Smith, Emma Smith, Erika Smith, Andrew (Kirsten) Smith, Lindsay (Tyson) Baker, Megan Webb and James Johnson. She was also blessed with 7 great-grandchildren, Elena Smith, Vincent Smith, Isaiah Smith, Ava Baker, Aubrey Munoz, Addison Baker and Thomas Smith. She is leaving many nieces, nephews and friends including her companion cat, Ozzy. Rosary will be held on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial is Wednesday, June 7 at 10:00 AM, both at St. Anne's Catholic Church. A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society, 330 S Main St, Wichita, KS 67202.
