Jim R. Hunter, age 78 passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2022. Jim was born May 13, 1944 to Frank and Ola (Keeler) Hunter in Wichita, Kansas. The ninth of ten children, he was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be missed.
Jim graduated North High School in 1963. Over 50 years later, he still attended reunions to reconnect with classmates. Jim had an artistic streak that led to a career as paint shop supervisor at Plastic Fab. On February 28, 1976, Jim married Nancy (Wellman) Tull, and – shortly thereafter – built the home they would share for the remainder of their marriage. During an uninterrupted 7-year stretch during the 70’s – 80’s, Jim was the undisputed ‘King of the Combover’, single-handedly keeping the hairspray industry in business. His legacy lives on in the hole he left in our Earth’s ozone. Jim loved to travel. Upon his retirement in 2003, he and Nancy enjoyed many wonderful vacations throughout the U.S. and abroad. They were also dedicated supporters of their grandsons’ JROTC activities, attending nearly every drill meet and ceremony. A perpetual handyman, his passion was his garden, which produced enough fruits and vegetables to allow him to proudly gift friends and loved one with corn, tomatoes, peppers, and more. He was also an avid collector of firewood, further ensuring that he had the largest carbon footprint on the block.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Ola Hunter; brothers, John, Joe and Marion; and sisters, Georgia (Cole), Goldie (Palmer), Gloria (Reiz) and Shirley (Vanderbilt).
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Nancy Hunter; sisters, Kay (Roberts) and Marilyn (Crown); sons, Shawn Hunter, Douglas Tull and James Tull; nine grandsons; three great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends.
Funeral service for Jim will be held 2:00 pm, Monday, August 29, 2022 with visitation one hour prior, at Lakeview Funeral Home, 12100 E. 13th Street N, Wichita, Kansas 67206.
Memorial contributions in Jim’s memory can be made to the Salvation Army and/or to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.
