Darlene Winter Lingg Burke, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and retired registered nurse, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at Marjorie's Home in Garden Plain, Kansas. Darlene was born on October 22, 1934, the fifth of seven children of Clem and Lucille (Peltzer) Winter.
Darlene spent much of her early life on the family farm located one mile north of Andale, Kansas, and graduated from Andale High School in 1952. She then attended the St. Francis School of Nursing in Wichita, where she forged many life-long friendships, and graduated in 1954 as a registered nurse. In 1957, Darlene married Marcellus Lingg, an Andale farmer, and together they raised five children on the farm where Darlene grew up. In 1996, she married William Patrick Burke, a contractor, retired U.S. Marine Corps First Sergeant, and Vietnam veteran, and they resided on the west side of Wichita for many years.
Darlene lived a life of service and devotion, knew no strangers, and was kind and helpful to all. She worked for many years as an oncology nurse at the St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. A tireless farm wife, and devoted mother and grandmother, Darlene loved taking her grandchildren to the zoo, the park, and movies. She never missed a recital, tee ball game or graduation. Darlene was an avid reader and frequent patron of Wichita's festivals, musicals and museums. She loved watching the Wizard of Oz, and football and basketball games at the high school, college and professional levels.
She is preceded in death by her spouse Pat Burke, her parents, step-mother Charlotte Winter Patzell, step-father William Patzell, Sr., former spouse Marcellus Lingg, brother Clem Winter, sisters Jeanette Landwehr, Evelyn Martin, Alice Bundy, Marian Stump, Doris Jaax, and step-son Tim Burke. She is survived by her children Thomas Lingg (Dianna) of Goddard, Kansas, Richard Lingg of Morristown, New Jersey, Patrick Lingg (Sandy) of Stockton, Kansas, Jean Inman (Daniel) of Schoolcraft, Michigan, Janet Korte (Jon) of Colwich, Kansas, step-son Bill Burke (Susan), step-daughters Jodie Linn (Jerry), Sue Lanier (Spencer), Mary Dodson (Jack), and Sharon Burke (David Beilharz), step-daughter-in-law Dee Beaman (Randy), brother-in-law Don Stump, sisters-in-law Rosemary Kissinger (Bob), Doris Ann Rosskopf, Catherine Geisinger (Jim), Virginia James (Dean), and Mary Evelyn Burke, step-brother William Patzell, Jr. (Venita), and step-sister Mary Pfanenstiel, and by 17 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 10 step-great grandchildren.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 17, 2022. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 18, 2022, both at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 2007 N. Arkansas Avenue, Wichita, Kansas. Inurnment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery, 318 Rush Avenue, Andale, Kansas, following reception at St. Patrick Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Center of Hope, P.O. Box 3237, Wichita Kansas 67201, or St. Patrick Grade School, 2007 N. Arkansas Ave., Wichita, Kansas.
