Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 16th from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at Hampton Vaughan Funeral Home. The service, officiated by Dr. Ike Butterworth, will be in the Hampton Vaughan Chapel on Wednesday, October 17th at 10:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest at the Feet of Jesus beside Betty, following the service at Crestview Memorial Park.
Uncle Lyle was born on February 1, 1918 in Lubbock, Texas to Stella and Lyle Gill Sr., a farmer and rancher living most of their lives in Wichita Falls. He and Betty were lifetime members of First Presbyterian Church, having been very active for many years.
Lyle and Betty spent most of their marriage on their cherished ranch raising registered Angus Cattle, specializing in some of the finest bulls for miles around. Lyle also worked several days a week trucking feed in from Hamlin for the other farmers and ranchers in Wichita County and the surrounding area. But raising his beloved cows was his greatest joy and he missed them most when he and Betty moved to town. Remembering the image of that tall thin man, with his hat pulled down and his heavy coat on to protect him from the harsh Wichita Falls prairie winds, bending down close to the ground to care for a tiny newborn calf that needed help, in many ways exemplifies his life. He was a strong confident man with a soft heart not often seen.
Always quick with a joke or story, as he got older he began to share old songs too. Lyle could be funny, caring and cantankerous in equal parts. He will be missed. They don’t make them like that anymore.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Betty Gill, the love of his life and his two brothers, Tom and Burnell Gill whom he frequently spoke of with great fondness.
He is survived by his two nieces, Gilda Hart and family, and Tommie Sue and family as well as other nieces, nephews, and more.
Our family wants to express heartfelt thanks to everyone in Wichita Falls who treated Lyle and Betty in their later years like members of their own families. God bless you and them.
