Jerry W Elam, age 85, of Wichita Falls, Texas went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 3, 2024. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at 10:00 A.M. in the chapel of Hampton Vaughan Crestview Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Hampton Vaughan Crestview Memorial Park.
Jerry was born at home on the family farm in Fannin County, Texas to Patrick Henry Elam and Martha Maurine (Scoggin) Elam.
After moving to Wichita Falls in 1952 with his family, he graduated from Wichita Falls High School and attended Midwestern State University. He was a business manager for the "Wichitan", the University's weekly news paper. He was a charter member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
He served in the Texas Army National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1968.
On February 26, 1966 he married Mira Martinek. They were a devoted couple with shared interests and values. During their long married life, it was rare to see one without the other. Jerry was a longtime member of First Baptist Church. He enjoyed the outdoors and traveling and camping with family and friends. Within his family and among his friends he was someone who could be counted on to always "do the right thing" and to be there for others. He never met a stranger and enjoyed life to the fullest.
His professional life began early when he started as a newspaper carrier at the age of 15. Most of his career was spent as the Branch Manager of Binswanger Glass Company. He worked at various part time jobs before retiring in 2019.
Through the years he served his community as a member of the University Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club of Wichita Falls and the Wichita Falls Founder Lions Club where he was honored with the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for dedicated humanitarian services from the Lions Clubs International Foundation in 2011. He also served on the Board of Directors of Camp Fire.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Pat Low and Evelyn Allison and his brother Earl Elam.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mira Elam of Wichita Falls, his brother Tom Elam and wife Pat, his niece Lenora Huffington and husband Monty and many other nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Wichita Falls, 1200 9th Street, Wichita Falls, Texas 76301.
