David Edwards Smith

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved father, David E. Smith, who left us on November 4, 2024, at the age of 79, in Hamilton, NJ. David was born in East Orange, New Jersey to his parents, David M. and Ruth Smith. David attended both Gordon College and Houghton University, but ultimately attained a Master’s Degree of Divinity from Denver Seminary. David’s long career with the Division of Youth and Family Services, as a Social Worker and then an Administrator, as well as his extensive networking with different churches and organizations post-retirement, encouraging families to adopt and foster, shows his lifelong passion for children’s welfare.

David is pre-decreased by his parents David M. and Ruth Smith. He is survived by his children Jennifer Shetayh and Jonathan Smith and their spouses Mark and Kira, as well as grandchildren Kylie, Derek, Zoe, and Devon. Also by his sisters Sharon Lally and Deborah Lawrence and each of their families.

David instilled a love for the outdoors in his children. His sense of adventure led to many road trips as a family from Niagara Falls, New York to Chincoteague, Virginia, as well as a cross country trip to Colorado and back. In addition to road trips, he was also quite passionate about kayaking and, while he was healthy, did that as much as he could of that in many areas. He was very involved in his church and loved his family. He also loved spoiling his grandchildren with presents. David would want everyone to know that his love for The Lord was paramount in his life.
