Mary Ellen (Coe) Rock, age 56, of Commerce Township, Michigan passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday September 5, 2024 with loving family by her side.
Born in Dubuque, Iowa on June 11, 1968 to John and Margaret (Devereaux) Coe, Mary Ellen was a fantastic person who dedicated her life to helping people through teaching, coaching and inspiring others to live a healthier lifestyle.
Mary Ellen graduated from Waterford Kettering High School, where she was on the basketball team, and went on to earn both Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Western Michigan University.
Mary Ellen loved her career as a lifelong educator with Swartz Creek Community Schools where she spent 30 years teaching a variety of subjects including Physical Education, French, and Health.
One of the things she was most proud of was the curriculum that she created and implemented in the school system that allowed students to learn life skills that weren’t traditionally taught in schools. Some of those skills were financial planning, banking, investing, balancing a checkbook, changing a flat tire, survival skills, first-aid, cooking, and baking. Mary Ellen even taught herself how to sew and knit, just so she could teach these skills to her students.
Mary Ellen was selfless, always looking to add value and give back whenever she could. She was a basketball coach at her school and over her entire career has been active with her teacher’s union, serving as their current President, a position she’s held since 2016.
Outside of her teaching, Mary launched her own health and wellness business inspiring others to live a healthier and better life.
But mostly Mary Ellen was just a wonderful, wonderful person. She was a loving wife and partner of 30 years to her husband Brendan. She was a constant cheerleader for her many nieces and nephews, always at countless sporting events, birthdays and homecomings over the years. Mary Ellen was a fantastic leader in the family and especially loved caring for her Mom, “Margo” , right up util the time of her passing earlier this year.
A lover of animals, Mary Ellen spent many years loving and caring for her beloved dog, Finnegan until his passing a few years ago. She loved to feed the wildlife in her neighborhood including birds, squirrels and deer and recently took in 4 stray cats who have become instant family members. Louie, Smokey, Archie and Ginger already miss Mary madly.
Mary Ellen is survived by her husband Brendan, sister Shelley (Dave) Parmenter, brother Thomas Coe, sister-in-law Julie Coe, sister-in-law Colleen Hecker, brothers-in-law Kris (Lisa) Rock, and Sean (Amy) Rock, in-laws Ronald and Theresa Rock and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
Mary is pre-deceased by her parents John & Margaret (Devereaux) Coe, brother John Coe, brother in-law Tom Hecker and many close relatives.
The family will receive guests on Saturday, September 14, 2024 from 1pm until 5pm at the Union Lake Chapel of the Elton Black & Son Funeral Home, 1233 Union Lake Road in White Lake, Michigan.
