While Mary Louise will be remembered for many of her unique qualities, her family will remember her fondly for her sense of humor & wit as well as the words of wisdom she often imparted throughout the years. “Never put anything in writing you wouldn’t want your mother to read!” and “This too shall pass” were two of her favorites.
Her children will remember her for being a loving and somewhat unconventional mother in her own special ways. For example, every now and then, she would let them ‘play hookey’ (stay home from school), make a batch of her Hershey’s Fudge and stay home with them to play Scrabble or Gin Rummy. Their friends were always welcome in her home and she always had a listening ear for all when they needed a shoulder to lean or cry on.
Mary Louise worked in retail management for many years. However, she found her true niche when she became employed with the Troy School District working in Job Placement. Using her outgoing personality, and direct approach to problem solving, Mary Louise matched clients with potential employers. Her specialty was finding jobs & job training opportunities for those with major barriers to employment (displaced homemakers, clients with language barriers, prison backgrounds, etc.) Mary Louise retired in 2001 after 19 very productive years where she was truly able to make a difference in her local community.
After retirement, Mary Louise fully enjoyed trips up north for family gatherings to spend time with her children and grandchildren. A major highlight was a road trip to Texas to visit a grandson during the holidays. Being a real ‘trooper,’ she had no fear traveling across the country through flooded plains and road detours fully embracing the saying, “The joy is in the journey”.
Seven years ago Mary Louise became a resident at Independence Village of White Lake. She faced this difficult transition with grace and dignity. Making many new friends along the way, she participated in many of the events and activities offered – Book Clubs, Bingo, Bus trips to the Casinos & the Dream Cruise, boat rides at Kensington Metropark and many other adventures throughout the years. Due to her great personality and gift of gab, she was even called upon by staff to be an Ambassador for the facility for new and prospective residents. Mary Louise will not only be missed by friends and family, but by her extended family at Independence Village as well.
