Doug was born in Bismarck, North Dakota, on July 23, 1950, to Donald E. and
Marilyn R. (Moellring) Montgomery. After moving to Colorado Springs in 1958 and
lived in Colorado for the rest of his life. He graduated from Alamosa High School in
1968 and Adams State College in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He
married his college sweetheart Mary Kathryn Berry in 1972 and moved to Golden.
Doug possessed an unparalleled work ethic and dedicated his time and talents to
Coors Brewing Company, where he served for 34 years until his retirement in 2005.
His sophisticated calculations were used to create brewing schedules that optimized
production. Doug also had a sophisticated palette that he put to use as a certified beer
taster for decades. He was fiercely loyal to Coors as an employee and a consumer.
Doug possessed multifarious interests and talents. As a lifelong scholar, he had a
remarkable curiosity about the world. He learned about so many things, normal and
obscure, just for the sake of knowing. Doug would never say no to a round of golf.
He had a great love and reverence for nature and welcomed any chance to get
outdoors and explore. He enjoyed hunting for its perks—the companionship, jokes,
beer, old stories, and new memories. He was thrilled to feed an old fox or watch the
elk cross his property. Doug’s affinity for experimenting took him to the kitchen. He
explored new recipes and delighted his family with lavish meals. As an avid home
improvement fan, he designed and crafted a barbecue area so he could hone his ribs
recipe. His beloved Triumph TR6 was an endless source of tinkering and wrenching.
Doug is survived by his mother and three children, Michael (Allison) of Steamboat
Springs, Matthew (Becca) of Golden, and Christina (William Meenan II) of Madison,
Mississippi, plus eight grandchildren. He is also survived by his ex-wife Kathryn and
three younger siblings David (Cynthia), Diane (James Hoffman), and Darryl (Deseri).
Doug’s family will host a memorial service on Monday, February 26 at 10 am at
Olinger Crown Hill (7777 West 29th Avenue in Wheat Ridge CO). In lieu of flowers,
please consider making a donation to the Outdoor Lab Foundation
