Charles was born on April 18, 1929 in Deer Creek, Oklahoma, to parents Ralph and Carolina Powell. He became older brother to Dorothy (four years younger) and John (eight years younger). He graduated from Ponca High School. He attended the University of Oklahoma, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music. He later took classes at the University of Omaha to become an accountant and earn his CPA.
Charles married Dorothy Ann Dagerman in 1954 in Omaha, Nebraska. They had four children - Susan, Charles Jr, Cynthia and Matthew. Charles and Dorothy moved from Nebraska to Wheat Ridge, Colorado in 1969.Dorothy passed away in 2002, and Charles married Glenda Balint in 2003. Charles and Glenda lived alternately in Wheat Ridge and Tulsa Oklahoma from 2002 until Glenda passed away in 2019.
Charles worked at banks and financial institutions in Omaha and Denver. In 1981, he opened his own bookkeeping and accounting business. He worked diligently at his practice for many years. He gradually took on fewer and fewer clients, and finally retired in 2020 at the age of 90.
When his children were younger, he enjoyed attending swim meets, softball games, soccer matches, band concerts, and piano concerts. Later he enjoyed dancing and playing saxophone, clarinet and flute in community concert and jazz bands.
Charles was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church for nearly fifty years.
Charles is survived by three of his children - Susan (John) Levine, Charles Jr (Gloria) Powell and Matthew (Julie) Powell, and son-in-law Craig (Diane) Rudolph, by grandchildren Teresa (Yev) Aspidov, Rebecca (Adam) Alberti-Powell, Jackson (Braden) Lawson-Rudolph, Stephanie Rudolph, Carl Powell, Rachel (Andrew) DesGranges, Jessica Powell, Samuel Levine, by great-grandchildren Lily DesGranges, Roman Aspidov, Cooper DesGranges, and Leo Aspidov, and by brother John (Margie) Powell, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by wife Dorothy Powell, wife Glenda Powell, daughter Cynthia Powell-Rudolph, and sister Dorothy Schuelein.
The funeral service for Charles will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, March 6 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 4500 Wadsworth Boulevard, Wheat Ridge, Colorado. The burial will be held at Olinger Cemetery - Crown Hill, 7777 W 29th Avenue, Wheat Ridge Colorado at 1:00 pm. There will be a viewing at Olinger Cemetery-Crown Hill from 2:00-4:00 pm on Sunday, March 5.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
