1933 ~ 2015
Betty, the youngest of nine children, was born to Walter and Elsie Figgitt on the family farm north of Balcarres on December 8, 1933. She attended school at Deter Lake Country School. As a child, she was involved in 4H. When Betty moved to Weyburn in 1955 and worked in the Anderson Café, she met the love of her life, Reiny Grams. They were married January 7, 1957 and the marriage was blessed with five children, Jim, Peggy, Doug, David and Greg. While she did work at the Co-op Cafeteria for a short time, her main “job” was Mom and Grandma. Betty enjoyed sports, playing fastball with the barmaids and was very active in Youth Bowling, coaching a team to the Nationals. She was also secretary for the Wednesday Mixed League. But in her “main job” during the summer she walked all five kids to Jubilee Park four nights a week to play softball and hardball. In the winter it was bowling. Her pride and joy was her garden and yard. You would see her out there tending it all the time. Auntie Betty and Uncle Reiny’s was the place where all the nieces and nephews from Balcarres came to spend their summer holidays. For many years their home continued to be the gathering place for family near and far no matter what the occasion. Betty was an active Legion member for over 30 years. She and Reiny enjoyed going to all the dances. They enjoyed traveling down south with their group of friends, “The Happy Tour Gang.” They also loved traveling to visit family and friends wherever they may be. They liked country music and that took them to Nashville, Branson and Craven many times. After Reiny’s passing in 2009, Betty and Peggy travelled to Calgary and Balcarres to see family and on one occasion went to New Brunswick to see Greg before her disease took over. She loved being with her grandchildren who were always at her house and her great grandchildren when they arrived. Sadly Betty had to enter the nursing home in 2011 and she remained there until her passing on July 22, 2015. May God give His peace and comfort to each who mourn Betty’s passing. When you have a loved one with Alzheimer Disease or Dementia they will end up in the nursing home. They will be agitated, confused, hallucinate and sometimes be aggressive. That is when the psychotic pills are given and usually more than one. When the results yield no change in their behavior more and more pills are given to calm them down and sedate them. These pills do not react well together. If you think something is not right with their medications you are usually right. Please take steps to fix this. A psychiatrist is usually consulted but should be conferring with a neurologist. Your loved one does not have a voice any more so the family has to be their voice and should be respected. You can choose whoever you want as your family doctor if they will take your loved one on as their patient. You do not have to use the one assigned by the nursing home. We would like to thank the Emergency room doctors and nurses, nurses and aides on the 3rd floor at the Weyburn General Hospital, the nurses and aides at Tatagwa View House 8. As well a very special thank you to Dr. Fady Ghaly for taking mom as his patient. Betty was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Elsie Figgitt; husband, Reinhold Grams; brothers, Pat and Wilf Figgitt and sisters, Elsie Storts and Molly Blayone. Betty will be lovingly remembered by her five children: Jim (Susan) Grams of Weyburn, SK, Peggy Grams of Weyburn, SK, Doug (Linda) Grams of Weyburn, SK, David (Trudy) Grams of Weyburn, SK and Greg (Kathy) Grams of St. John, NB; her grandchildren: Candace (George), Melissa (Blake), Peter, Jason (Stacy), Kelsey (Paul) Cassandra (Jordan), Byron (Denni) and Dietrick, her great grandchildren: Anna, Chloe, Alex, Joey, Raquel and Eddie; brothers, John, Jim (Delores) , Alec (Edna) Figgitt; sister, Winnie Henley; sisters-in-law, Bev Figgitt, Linda Byam, Ruth Schultz and Martha McFadden; brothers-in-law, Herb Grams and Rudy Grams as well as other family and friends. A Memorial Service was held on Monday, July 27, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. from Zion Lutheran Church, Weyburn, SK with Pastor Martin Olson officiating. Interment will take place at a later date.
