Phillip James Coviello

Phillip “Phil” James Coviello, 72, of Wethersfield, passed away peacefully at Hartford Hospital on Thursday, December 19, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was the cherished husband of Irene Carabase Coviello, his soulmate and partner for 38 years.

Phil was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on October 6, 1952, to the late Florence “Flo” Fortunato Salamone and Nunzio Coviello. Raised in Hartford, Phil later moved to Wethersfield, where he met the love of his life, Irene. A graduate of Hartford High School, Phil went on to have a fulfilling career with the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation, retiring after many dedicated years of service.

Phil and Irene were married on May 17, 1986, at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Hartford. They built a life filled with love and were inseparable throughout their marriage. Phil was a devoted husband, always putting Irene’s happiness above his own. Together, they shared a deep bond, often described as being "arm in arm, never one without the other."

Flo and Phil’s stepfather, Joseph Salamone, played a significant role in his life, imparting wisdom, and helping shape the kind, thoughtful man Phil became. Known for his gentle spirit and quick wit, Phil found joy in simple pleasures: spending time with loved ones, traveling, enjoying live music, singing, storytelling, and making impressions that left others smiling. He had a gift for conversation and could charm anyone with his humor and warmth.

Phil and Irene particularly loved the beach, creating lasting memories during their many seaside vacations, including a recent two-week trip to Aruba that they treasured. Known by endearing nicknames like Philly, Philippe, Philippo, and “Sweet Pea”—the name Irene lovingly called him—Phil’s presence was a source of light and joy to all who knew him.

Phil is survived by his beloved wife, Irene Carabase Coviello; his brother, Brian Coviello and wife Russett; his sister, Sharon Coviello; and his in-laws, Maria and Tom daCunha, Penelope and Robert Kemp, Anthony and Marianne Carabase, Robert McGee, and Cathy Carabase. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who adored him.

Phil was predeceased by his parents, his stepfather, his infant brother Richard Coviello, and his in-laws, Eugenia McGee, George Carabase, and Todd Meade.

Phil’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Wethersfield Emergency Services and the staff at Hartford Hospital’s Emergency Room for their compassionate care.

A celebration of Phil’s life will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Casa Mia at the Hawthorne Inn in Berlin. Burial will be private at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Phil will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his warmth, humor, and the love he shared with everyone he met.
