Alan W. Powers, 85, of Wethersfield, beloved husband of Arlene (Romitelli) Powers for 61 years passed away on Sunday, May 21, 2023. Born in Hartford on December 7, 1937, he was the son of the late Elizabeth (Muir) Powers. Al grew up in Hartford, graduating from Bulkeley High School, class of 1956, and served proudly in the Army National Guard. He and Arlene settled in Wethersfield in 1962, where he served the town as a police officer for 35 years, retiring in 1995.
Al was one of those officers that everybody knew and loved. He proudly wore WPD’s Badge #1 which was quite an honor amongst his beloved peers. Al always took the time to get to know you and he made everyone he met feel special. Al was a simple man, full of love for his family and friends. He often reminisced of playing softball in town with his two sons and the joy it brought him. He adored his grandchildren and was extremely proud of them. With Arlene by his side, he enjoyed watching them play at all their various sporting events. He loved golfing with his buddies. He also loved his dogs as well as everyone else’s dogs. He frequently commented on how blessed he was to have such a loving family and so many remarkable friends.
Al will be forever missed by his devoted wife Arlene; three children, Stephen Powers and wife, Rita, Gary Powers and wife, Diane, and Colleen Powers Miller and husband, John along with his six grandchildren: Lauren, Morgan, Mitchell, Grant, Troy and Jordyn. In addition, Al is survived by his loving nephew, Randy Romitelli and wife, Joanne.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 31 at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Parish (Corpus Christi Church), 601 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield. Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church. Burial will be private. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield. In lieu of flowers, Donations in Al’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
