Born in New York, NY to the late James J. and Kathleen Murphy (nee Finnegan), Jim grew up in River Edge, NJ. He graduated from Regis High School in New York, NY and from St Joseph's College in Philadelphia. He earned his Masters and Ph.D in Physics from Fordham University in the Bronx. He taught Physics for 40 years and also served as department chair at Iona College in New Rochelle, NY before retirement.
Most recently, Jim lived at Sunrise of Woodcliff Lake and was a parishioner of Our Lady Mother of the Church in Woodcliff Lake, NJ. He was a former parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Chestertown, MD where he served as cantor and Our Lady of Victories in Harrington Park, NJ where he served as a lector. He was also a member of the Iona College Vocal Ensemble and the Chester River Chorale.
Jim was predeceased by his his wife Francine and his brother Gerard. He is survived by his daughter Ellen Brown and her husband David of Woodcliff Lake, NJ, by sons James and his wife Mary of Northborough, MA and Daniel and his wife Kathryn of Nanuet, NY. He was blessed to be Granddad to four grandchildren: Peter Brown and his wife Jenna, Elizabeth Brown, and Olivia and James Murphy. He is also survived by his siblings Paul Murphy, Kevin Murphy, Kathleen Kelly, their spouses, in-laws and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the teams at Sunrise of Woodcliff Lake and Valley Hospice for the extraordinary care, compassion and respect they showed Jim over the years.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass on Thursday, February 23, 2023 at 11AM at Our Lady Mother of the Church in Woodcliff Lake, NJ. Interment will be on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 1 PM in St, John's Cemetery in Rock Hall, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jim's memory to the Parkinson's Foundation (www.parkinson.org).
