George M. DeTitta Sr., departed this life on December 23, 2024. He lived a long, beautiful life where his family & friends were always the focus of his life. He was surrounded by love & respect throughout his long life. …He was born in the Bronx on November 26, 1930, the son of George & Jennie DeTitta . In the Bronx, a member of Our Lady of Pity RC parish, he served as an altar boy.
George graduated Cardinal Hayes HS in the Bronx in 1948. He then went on to graduate from Seton Hall University in 1952. Upon graduation, he entered into the US Army, serving in Korea in 1954/55. He then pursued a career in the motion picture industry & became a member of Local 52 IATSE in NYC. While a member of the property department, George worked as a set decorator during his career behind the camera before moving to the union’s front office in various leadership roles. He was nominated for an Academy Award in 1982 for the film Ragtime for best art direction.
George served as the President of the union from 1996-2004. He was the most senior member of the organization at the time of his death; his support & dedication to the union was a testament to a union he truly loved & was part of for over 70 years. George was an active member of our Lady of Mercy RC parish in Park Ridge. Throughout his life he served in the various organizations such as the Knights of Columbus & the Korean War Vets.
George married June Flugel in 1954, the love of his life. They raised 5 children, residing in River Vale NJ from 1960-1994.
George is survived by his five loving children, George (Lesley), Patrice (Michael), Jerry (Ellen), Chris (Loretta), Beth (Rich). Cherished grandfather of Daniel, Lauren, Katelyn, Michael, Nicholas, Matthew, Juliette, Christopher, Delaney, Meg, great grandchildren Avery & Jameson. He is also survived by his sister Marie, niece, nephews, cousins & beloved extended family & friends. George is predeceased by his wife, June, his mother & father, Jennie & George & his sister, Anna DiMeo.
Services will be at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Road, Westwood, NJ on Sunday December 29, from 2-8 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Mercy R.C. Church in Park Ridge, NJ at 10 AM on Monday December 30, followed by burial at Ascension Cemetery in Airmont, NY.
