In Loving Memory of
Thu T. Phan, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on November 29, 2022. He was 91 years old.
He is survived by his former spouse Hong, his children Khanh, Khoa, and Dawn; his grandchildren Mary, Joey, Viet, Ha Tu, Nam, Minh, Vi, Michael, and Christopher; and his great-grandchildren Evelyn, Joshua, Layna, Tristan, and Riley. Thu is predeceased by his parents, Vien and Trung; his sisters Nhiem, Anh and Tuyet; his brother Quoc; his son Dat and his late daughter-in-law LeYen.
Thu attended Thu Duc Military Academy (an officer training school of the Army of the Republic of South Vietnam) in 1951 and served in the Office of the General Staff, Department of Military Intelligence 1954-1975. Lieutenant Colonel Thu Phan was a dedicated Army Intelligence officer and served multiple tours overseas including Japan and the United States. He was well-known and respected in the Intelligence Community.
Thu immigrated to the United States in 1991 through the Orderly Departure Program (ODP), which permitted the immigration of Vietnamese to The US and other countries. He settled in Columbia, Missouri in 1992 and became an US citizen in 1996. Thu retired in 2002 and moved to Fountain Valley, California to live with his daughter, Khanh Nguyen and her family, in 2015.
Friends and colleagues described Thu as a man of strength and perseverance, charismatic, fashionable, a great dancer, and great friend. In his later years, Thu enjoyed watching sports and movies, listening to music, and keeping up with world news and events. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He will be remembered as a loving father; a caring grandfather and great-grandfather; and a good friend.
A memorial service will be held on December 15, 2022, at Peek Funeral Home in Westminster, CA. The services schedule is detailed in the "Services" section below.
