Margaret Tiplady Burgess was born on August 27, 1925 in Glossop, England, the only daughter of Ernest and Esther Tiplady. She had one brother, John, who passed away in 2004. She was a nurse during the war and enjoyed caring for others. She came to the United States in the 1950’s and met her sweetheart, Charles Burgess who was a jazz musician. They were married in a chapel at Forest Lawn in 1957. They did not have any children, but were devoted to each other and loved spending time together. Charles passed away in 2000.
Margaret was a woman of many talents. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed growing her own vegetables and flowers and canning the fruit from her trees and produce from her garden. Margaret was creative and artistic and loved to paint on furniture and china. She enjoyed wallpapering and quilting with tiny fine stitches. Margaret also was an accomplished knitter and could knit with her eyes closed. She knit many outfits and sweaters for herself and others as well as countless baby shawls for her friends’ children and grandchildren.
Margaret also loved to read and learn new things about everything in the world. She had clippings about every subject and wrote notes in the margins. She did enjoy a little fiction too and her favorites were the Harry Potter series and the movies that went with them. One of her favorite gifts that she used daily was her sword of Griffindor letter opener. She also enjoyed her English shows that reminded her of home such as Doc Martin, Father Brown, and Downton Abbey.
She loved clothes and fashion and dressing up each evening to have dinner with her group of UVTO friends. She missed that activity the most when confined to her apartment during the past ten months.
Margaret Burgess has been a University Village of Thousand Oaks resident since September 2007. In those early years her favorite place was the gym. She was very health conscious and liked to work out and enjoyed a healthy diet. Sadly, a lung disease the last few years prevented her from doing what she loved most and she passed away on December 9, 2016. She is survived by a sister-in-law in England and a nephew and his family in Scotland, besides many dear friends nearby who were close to her.
We would like to express our gratitude to the resident service staff of UVTO for the wonderful care they gave to Margaret and the genuine love they had for her. She saw them several times a day and enjoyed each one’s visits and conversations. Margaret’s caregivers were truly amazing and we are so appreciative and touched by their love, care and devotion.
We are also grateful for Buena Vista Hospice and all that they did to make her comfortable so that she was able to stay at home this past year.
We are grateful that Margaret was loved and so well cared for when we couldn’t be there. Thank you with all of our hearts!
There will be a memorial gathering and viewing at 2:00 pm on Thursday, December 15, 2016 in the chapel at Pierce Brothers-Valley Oaks, 5600 Lindero Canyon Road in Westlake Village. A brief graveside ceremony will follow.
