Surrounded by her immediate family with hearts full of love, Amy Gail Mowry, 51, of Wood Ranch, CA sadly passed away on September 26th, 2022, as a result of a 7 ½ year battle with triple negative breast cancer.
Born on September 17th,1971, Amy graduated from Cleveland High School and started her college education at UCSD. There, she joined the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. She transferred to CSUN receiving her BA in Psychology and continued her education by earning two master’s degrees, first in teaching from Pepperdine University and second in School Counseling from Phillips University.
During high school, Amy worked at the local Hallmark store. Over the next decade, she worked at the Valley Swap meet in Woodland Hills, Serrania Elementary School as an Aid, Sports Plus Day Camp, and Millikan Middle School as a PE Teacher (2000-2003).
In 2005, Amy became a School Counselor at Birmingham High School in Lake Balboa. In her 20 years in education, she mentored and guided thousands of students. Amy loved working at Birmingham where she built unbelievable relationships not only with colleagues who became close friends but most importantly, with her students. If you walked into Amy’s office at lunch time you would find at least a dozen students around her desk eating lunch, sharing stories, and laughing together. Amy had the ability to build a strong connection with all who knew her. Her dedication to her students matched her innate qualities as a mother as she had a passion to guide her students as if they were her own children. Amy also had a passion for sports and extracurricular activities. In support of her students, Amy enjoyed attending plays, performances, and almost every sporting event at Birmingham. Her passion and connection to her students is evident by the number of maintained connections, love, and support shown by former students throughout the past twenty years.
In 2002, Amy married the love of her life, Matt Mowry. They met at Sports Plus Day Camp and instantly knew they were meant for each other. Amy had the pleasure of working at the same High School as Matt. Working in the school district provided Amy the flexibility to do what she loved such as, planning trips to explore different places as well as line up baseball stadium visits in addition to spending free time with family and friends. Amy and Matt started a family together soon after their marriage beginning with the birth of their daughter, Kyla, in 2003, followed by the birth of their son, Nolan, in 2006.
Amy was most passionate about her family and their accomplishments. Kyla’s cheerleading, field hockey and acceptance to the University of Alabama, selection to Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and attending Bama football (ROLL TIDE!!!). Watching Nolan play football, basketball and his favorite, baseball, which spanned 12 years from T-ball to Chaminade Varsity. And lastly, watching her husband Matt do what he loves and following his dreams of coaching the Birmingham Varsity Baseball team which won 4 city championships.
Traditions were very important to Amy. Enchiladas and Carvel cake on her birthday starting at 10 years old, 4th of July Fireworks, holiday house decorating, sleeping over at her mom’s house on Christmas eve, the Hanukkah candle races, driving to see holiday lights, Easter Egg hunts and much more. She had a passion for relationships, bringing people together, and celebrating life. She loved giving others cards and presents when it was their birthday, a holiday, or even if she just found something in a store that reminded her of them.. Amy was a fantastic swimmer, loved the water and ocean in the summer, skiing in the mountains during the winter. Another love of Amy’s was shopping. Amy’s rule: “Never buy retail!” She loved gambling in Vegas, poker and cigars in her early years and betting in football pools. Not to forget her love of the NFL especially the Denver Broncos, another rule: Never bother Amy when the Broncos were playing! Also: Always bet on the Broncos, no matter what!
Amy is survived by her parents, Sara Cote (Charles Cote) and Moe Sapiro (Carolyn Sapiro), husband, Matt, children, Kyla (19) and Nolan (16), brother, Brent Sapiro (Jean Sapiro), Brother in-law Brian, cousins, nieces, nephews, colleagues, and friends. Our hearts are full of sadness of Amy’s passing. She will be immensely missed.
