Ms. Sharon Barbara Amer

Sharon was born in Lethbridge, Alberta to Albert Amer and his wife, Dorothy, their only child together. She was predeceased by both Bert (1995) and Dorothy (1988) as well as by her half-brother Robert (2013). Sharon is survived by her daughter Jennifer Chaston (Len).

Sharon graduated with a BA from UBC where she was affiliated with the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Upon graduation she decided to pursue a career in the new field of dental hygiene. She enrolled at Columbia University in New York and completed her BSc in dental hygiene. She then taught for a year at the University of Alberta before returning to Columbia for her Masters Degree, the first in her field in Canada to achieve that degree. In 1967, at age 27, she began work in Ottawa as the Federal Coordinator of Dental Hygiene for Canada. She spent the next 30 years at Health Canada before retiring to West Vancouver where she enjoyed walks on the seawall and spending time with her Auntie Marg, her cousins, Marilyn and Diane, and numerous friends..

Sharon had a quirky passion for dental health. At Halloween she dispensed toothbrushes, dental floss and stern lectures on the perils of sugar instead of sweets. She was a kind and gentle person, generous to friends and strangers alike. Through all her trials later in life she maintained her sense of humour and optimistic outlook. She was a committed volunteer and supported too many charities to list. A memorial in Sharon's name will be held at a later date.

The family would like to express their thanks to the staff at Inglewood Care Home, Dr. Greg Phillips and her companion, Marissa Beltran, for taking care of Sharon. In lieu of flowers, please consider performing an act of kindness to a stranger in Sharon's memory. Sharon would have liked that.
