Evelyn Patricia Cook, wife, mother,
grandmother, sister, aunt, teacher, volunteer,
extraordinaire, and dear friend to all, passed
away quietly on February 24, 2017 in North
Vancouver, BC.
Born on June 9, 1938 in Edmonton, AB, to
parents Eugene and Muriel Drake, Pat and
younger brother Bill grew up and developed
lifelong friendships in the Oliver district of the
city. Upon completion of high school, Pat
attended the University of Alberta, where she
received her Teaching Certificate and taught
grades two and four at Grovenor School until
the spring of 1963. Of all the relationships
that grew out of the Oliver community, the
most enduring connection was with the Cook
clan, of which Pat became a part of when
she married Edwin on June 29, 1963. The
Cook family grew a little larger when Pat
and Ed welcomed sons Graham and Trevor,
and settled in west Edmonton’s Valleyview
community.
Pat chose not to return to the teaching
profession, and instead, created a safe,
welcoming, and happy home for her family.
Always an active member of the community,
Pat had a special relationship with the
Edmonton YWCA that began when she was a
teenager. As her family grew up, Pat
committed countless volunteer hours to the
“Y”, and in 1990, her contributions were
recognized with the creation of the Pat Cook
Award, which is still presented to those who
demonstrate volunteer excellence.
Pat made a lasting impression on everyone
she came in contact with. Her warmth and
generosity of spirit stayed with her even when
the ravages of early onset dementia began to
take its toll after the death of Ed in 2007. She
will be deeply missed by sons Graham
(David), Trevor (Abigail); brother Bill (Liz)
Drake; grandsons Tyler, Evan and Nolan
Cook; the extended Cook, Drake, Kumish,
Townend, Longley families; and many others
she counted as close friends. The family
would like to specifically recognize the
incredible care team at Sunrise of Lynn Valley
for their outstanding efforts in making Pat’s
life comfortable, happy, and safe.
To celebrate Pat’s life and achievements, a
memorial service will be planned at a date
later in 2017. In lieu of flowers, a donation in
Pat’s name to the Alzheimer Society Canada
would be greatly appreciated.
