Jan 27,1929 - Nov 18, 2020
Dorothy Sim (Yates), passed away peacefully at home on November 18 2020 with family by her side. Predeceased by her husband James (Jim) and survived by her brother Tom Yates, her children Christine (Guy) and Jamie (Erin) and her grandchildren Hailey, Brian, Morgan and Alicia as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family. Dorothy was born in Deloro Ontario and graduated from Toronto General Hospital Nursing in 1950, her nursing career began in Hamilton. Dorothy had a strong spirit of adventure, a desire to see the mountains and a dear friend, Norma in Vancouver so she packed up and headed westward in her little Hillman. She continued her career at Vancouver General Hospital and after a couple of moves to the BC Interior and Ontario she returned to Invermere as Head Nurse for their new hospital. It was while Dorothy was working in Invermere that Jim started to drive from Calgary to visit, initially she thought Jim’s weekends in Invermere were about socializing with friends but Jim’s intention was only for her. They married in 1963 and raised a family in West Vancouver while building friendships that have lasted decades. Dorothy always put others ahead of herself, she opened her home to everyone and embraced all who met her. She had a terrific sense of humour and was a trusted, steadfast friend to many. She was also a beloved mother who encouraged her children to forge their own paths in life and to always step forward, never look back. Dorothy will be deeply missed by her family and friends but she wished only to take happy memories from her time with us...how lucky for those who knew and loved her that we have many memories to visit. Our family would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Kathleen Bell-Irving and Dorothy’s wonderful caregiver Vicky, we are incredibly grateful to have managed mum’s needs so she could remain at home.
