My husband knew for many years that he would eventually need a valve replacement. Dr. Jakubowski, being aware of his condition, monitored him carefully. Then came the day, at one of his appointments that Dr. Jakubowski decided that the time for surgery had arrived. I fell apart. My husband had the opposite reaction. My husband had been a patient with Dr. Jakubowski for many years and had full confidence that the surgery would be successful. Dr. Jakubowski referred him to the best surgeon, as he had many great relationships for referrals of this sort. Dr. Jakubowski kept a close eye on him, with many follow-up appointments after surgery. Now, years after surgery, the doctor still maintained regular appointments with my husband. My husband had good reason to place his trust in Dr. Jakubowski. He was a wonderful man and doctor and cared for his patients. Unfortunately, it is now August and we just found out, a day before an appointment, that he passed away. What a horrible shock. We will miss him greatly and send our condolences to his family, patients, comrades, and friends.

Dr. Jakubowski was my my doctor for over twenty years. He helped not only my heart, but other health issues I had. He also gave me good life advice and was one of most caring doctors I have been fortunate to meet. I loved to see him at my checkup. I had recently asked him when he was going to retire and he told me that he still had the capacity for helping people.

I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing and I pray that his family are comforted during this difficult time. May God bless them.

Dr. J. has been a part of my health life for over 20 years.  He went the extra mile when needed.  In my case talking me though some difficult decisions with his direct (no holds barred) advice.  I came away from my appointments more knowledgeable and encouraged with a glass half full attitude no matter the outcome.  He instilled a calmness that was infectious.  I saw him a week before he died and my last memory of him was a bit of dry humour thrown in with my appointment.   I will miss the assurance of feeling that we were cared for by the best and that there was pride in calling him my cardiologist.  Condolences to the family and blessings on the beautiful treasures called memories he left behind for you enjoy and share as you heal.

There is a path that leads to a turn in the road and we each must travel there. Where the Father waits to take us home to the shelter of His care. Where happiness and peace and joy replace the tears and pain and our loved ones rest in the arms of God to sweetly live again. Praying God will hold you close and gently ease your sorrow, heal your heart, and strengthen you for every new tomorrow.

I want to express sincere condolences to your family. Dr J was my mother’s cardiologist for at least 20 years- and until her passing at 93 years old. His  calm demeanour and kindness towards mom was so wonderful as he helped her navigate her treatment options .  His smile was contagious.

Dr. Jakubowski had been my cardiologist for many years (my first contact with him was when I was 46 years old and I am now 75).  He always exemplified a professional manner but at the same time, he exuded warmth and a sense of humor as well as a keen interest in discussing a wide range of other topics.  I always enjoyed my appointments with him and looked forward to seeing him.  Dr. Jakubowski was both a consummate professional while, at the same time, a wonderful conversationalist who you could engage on many different topics.  I will miss him.

Thank you for posting this lovely picture of Dr J. He has been important to me and my family for about 35 years and can’t imagine him not being there for my next appointment.  My memories include his first visit to my husband’s hospital bed, me running down the halls wanting more answers, him taking my phone calls and for making a special visit to my husband at VGH because we needed him, his condolence card to my family when my husband died and for taking me as a patient these past years because I don’t trust anyone else. There’s a void no one can fill. RIP Dr J.

Andrjey was a very first MD and medical colleague in future I met after my arrival to Canada in early 1999. By grace of God that very dark and rainy night, when I by pure chance and out of curiosity walked into the lobby of Richmond Hospital, I saw this pleasant guy going downstairs - and that was cardiologist on call that night, Dr Jakubowski. We started a conversation, them met few days later in his office and surely he helped me a lot with recommendations and instructions how to go ahead towards re licensing. He was always helpful, kind and passionate.  I will never forget this. He will be missed by all of us. R.I.P.

He was a great colleague, friend, and mentor. He was so easy to talk to and always had the best manners. I never saw him in a bad mood over 10 years that I worked with him.
He always had the best advice about everything in life, be it medicine, finance, travel, fashion, etc.
 His favourite quote was "paradise now".
 He enjoyed working hard and had plan to work for many more years. It is so sad that his life was cut so short.

I was a patient of his for many years as was my father before me. Dr. Jakubowski was directly responsible for extending the life of my father far beyond what any of us could have reasonably expected. That was a gift he gave our family that we could never repay. As a patient of his I knew I was in good hands and I loved his “old school” manner. Inviting me into the office each and every time, the white coat, and his straightforward approach. He was just the most charming and kind man. I will miss him terribly. We shared many memorable moments in almost every aspect of life: in joy, in difficult times, during celebrations, in discussions, in nature, in concert halls, at the table ... He was a gentleman gifted with wit and a sense of humour. We admired his vitality and great appetite for a full life. He was a very hospitable and generous host, loved and respected by friends with whom relationships lasted for decades. 
  Simultaneously we will remember him as a fulfilled and highly respected person in his profession as a cardiologist. Many of us, and my husband Janek in particular, owe him a lot. 
The passing of a loved one creates a void that cannot be filled. Yet, having shared over 30 years together we are left with the gift of memories and feelings in our hearts. Let us remember the good times and let them be the source of consolation to those who loved him.

I first met Dr J in 1992 when I was just 28. I saw him regularly after that almost every year and in the last 6 years every 6 months. He was a rock, an amazing practical doctor to never pulled any punches. When I last saw him he said he had had Covid and was still suffering the after effects but was slowly recovering but he was still at work. I shall miss him most dearly as a person and as a doctor. After having a heart attack in June of 2003 then bypass surgery shortly after!
I had the pleasure of attending his healthy heart exercise program at the Richmond hospital!  He was so kind and understanding 
Of my  fears after surgery !

Our good friend, Andrzej Jakubowski was dedicated to his vocation.
He was professional, and caring and gave full attention to his patients.  For the past 30 years, he took care of my father and later
of my husband, I believe that he save his life.
In social contacts, he had a "sparkling "presence, a good sense of humor, and gentlemanly manners. It was always very interesting to
to be involved with him in conversations on almost every topic.
HE WAS ONE OF THE KIND !
He will be greatly missed !

Don’t think of him as gone away, his journeys just begun, 
life holds so many facets this earth is only one. 
Just think of him as resting from the sorrows and the tears, 
in a place of warmth and comfort where there are no days and years. 
Think how he must be wishing that we could know today how nothing 
but our sadness can really pass away. And think of him living in the 
hearts of those he touched... for nothing loved is ever lost and he was 
loved so much.

My husband was referred to Dr. Jakubowski in the 1990s and I accompanied my husband to his appointments until his death in 2003.  Dr. Jakubowski was knowledgeable, professional, and caring.

I was referred to Dr. Jakubowski in 2022 and at the first appointment, he remembered my husband and the fact that he liked to wear an ascot and had a wonderful sense of humour.

I want to express my condolences to his family. Dr. Jakubowski will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered.

I met Dr. J (Jakubowski) under what I would describe as not the most ideal of circumstances. I found him to be knowledgeable, professional and caring in all my dealings with him. My appointments with him were never like the traditional doctor - patient meetings. He took the time to explain my situation in plain terms and provided me with the options for treatment.  I am truly sadden to hear of his passing and want to express my deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. He will be missed but not forgotten.   

I am saddened to hear of Dr. Jakubowski’s passing. We last met on the 25th of January. For the past 30 years he took care of me and my heart. He nourished my health and well-being. In our many discussions we talked about the past and the future. But, we never predicted the future and never thought he would leave us so soon. Though we are from different religions we always respected each other and may see each other again on another path. Our prayers are with his family.

My relationship with Andrew was at first as a medical colleague then later as a very grateful patient. I believe he saved my life. It was a great shock to learn of his tragic passing - the kind that  leaves one with that hollow feeling. 
He was a consummate professional old school doctor  in manner, dress, care and attention to detail. As a mentor, a young physician, or anyone for that matter, would be hard pressed to find a better role model. 
He will be greatly missed by all of us and will be remembered as the fine person he was. This is a great legacy.

I, undoubtedly like so many of his other medical colleagues at RH, write this with a strong sense of the fragility in each of our individual lives,  with the feeling that one of our own colleagues has been suddenly torn away from the fabric of our hospital.  I had the wonderful experience of sitting down with "Dr. J" many times in the warmer days of summers past at the Japanese Coi pond that he regularly contributed to, both in stocking, maintaining and financing. We would discuss random topics of interest outside of medicine in an almost quixotic manner- before we would come to our senses, and realize we had made ourselves late for some other engagement!  When I am leaving the hospital in the middle of the night, I have always looked up at that lit sign that reads "Richmond Hospital" and thought of the same man who was instrumental in putting it there. Thank you for your contributions to Richmond Hospital, Andrew, in all respects.


Dear Andrew:   You were always in a bit of a rush,  but this departure was way too hasty.  Remember when we went skiing together.  It was up at Whistler on a beautiful sunny day, and we would pause, sit on a snow bank, and wonder at the scenery surrounding us.  Later we dined at your place in Montebello, drank a lot of wine, took turns playing the guitar, and indulged in discursive conversation.  Our talks wandered well beyond the confines of medicine.  As a cardiologist you were straightforward, which is something your patients benefitted from.  As a surgeon, I teased you that you had more of a surgeon’s demeanour, and I think you agreed.   We gave each books…and I had the opportunity of admiring your depth and pursuit of philosophical interests.  And, lastly, you were a man of great sensitivity,  which took me years to uncover.   I was never able to convert you to the dark side of snowboarding, but perhaps in the future we can disport ourselves in the clouds.   Lorne Brown

Dr. Jakubowski tested and supported me from my first experience with chest pains (2003) through to the relatively healthy life I presently enjoy.  I will miss his annual checkups and assurances he always gave me.  With his initiations I have had several stress tests, angiograms, various other tests, angioplasty (4 stents), three bypass procedures, and an Aorta valve replacement. Could never thank him enough.
