Norman Bowen Smith

Norman served his country with honor in the Army during the Korean War. His bravery earned him several commendations, including Service Stars, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Silver Star.

Following his service in the military he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Southwestern States area. On September 2, 1955, he married the love of his life, Santos Garza, in the Idaho Falls Temple. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Several years later he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Idaho State University

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Norman was deeply committed to his family. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving faithfully in various capacities. His dedication extended to the Boy Scout Council in Wyoming, where he made a significant impact.

An avid outdoorsman, Norman loved nature and enjoyed sharing this passion with his family. He taught his children how to fish, took them camping, and imparted valuable survival skills. Norman and his wife Sandy cherished their time together in the mountains of Wyoming and Utah, whether in their trailer or tent, enjoying the beauty of the outdoors.

Norman was also a hardworking individual who pursued many business opportunities throughout his life. His entrepreneurial spirit was evident in all he undertook.

He is survived by his loving children, Debra Almond (Grant) and Susan Louise Bitter (Wade), as well as twelve grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren, who were the light of his life. He is also survived by his brother, Marsden Vincent Smith (Linda), Sister-in-law Doreen, and Sister-in-Law Charolotte.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Verda; his siblings, Glen Ralph Smith, Ronald Miller Smith, Verl Robert Smith, and Sharel Ann Smith; his dear wife, Sandy; and his son, David John Smith (Brenda).

Norman lived a life rich in faith, family, and love. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and devotion will be cherished by all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Services to honor Norman’s life will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at 9:45 am at Valley View Memorial Park and Funeral Home, located at 4335 W 4100 S, West Valley City, Utah. A viewing will take place prior to the service from 9:00-9:30 am. Interment will follow at Valley View Memorial Park.
