With deep sorrow, we announce the peaceful passing of Karen Mayne, a beloved mother, grandmother, educator, and Utah State Senator, on August 15, 2024, after a courageous 2.5-year battle with brain cancer. She was 78.
Karen devoted her life to public service, championing education, healthcare, and economic development in her community and the Utah State Legislature. She stepped into public office in 2007, succeeding her late husband, labor union icon Ed Mayne, who also passed away from cancer. Together, the Maynes represented residents of the Salt Lake Valley’s West Side for nearly three decades. Known for her ability to work across party lines, Karen was a steadfast advocate for her constituents, particularly in her beloved West Side district. Her collaborative spirit and dedication left a lasting legacy, evident in the lives she touched and the policies she helped shape.
During her 20 years as a para-educator in the Granite School District, Karen’s passion for learning made a profound impact. She was also a staunch supporter of workers’ rights and served as Vice President of the Utah AFL-CIO, where she tirelessly championed opportunities for all, with a particular focus on women in the trades.
Karen’s passing is a significant loss to the community she served so faithfully. Her contributions to Utah will be remembered with deep gratitude. More than a public servant, Karen was a compassionate leader whose work will continue to inspire future generations.
Beyond her professional achievements, Karen was a devoted wife and mother, finding her greatest joy in her family—her late husband Ed, son Paul (Jana), daughter Jamie (Trever), and her six grandchildren: Jackson, Maddy, Eli, Kennedy, Dylan, and Amelia. Her love for them was unwavering, and she cherished every moment spent together.
The family extends a special thank you to those who cared for her during her final years: her brother Phil (Barbara), sisters Connie (Craig) and Shauna (Mike), her special friend Tony, and her beloved friends Jen, Chris, Kathy, and Nancy. Our heartfelt condolences go out to all who knew and loved her. Her spirit and the values she championed will live on in the lives she transformed.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests making a donation to Utah Women in Trades, Utah Food Banks, or Trinity United Methodist Church in Karen’s memory.
