March 30, 1945 – July 15, 2024
Jim Kammeyer, age 79, passed from this life Monday July 15, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born March 30, 1945, in Tacoma, Washington and raised by Gearhart Kammeyer and Betty June Ramsay Kammeyer. As an Army family they traveled when duty called and spent three years in Germany after World War II. After they returned to the U.S. they moved to California and Jim spent part of his high school years running track and playing handball in San Francisco. The family moved back to Tacoma where Jim worked diligently to purchase his horse, Peanuts whom he loved dearly. He did submarine training in high school and joined the Navy after his senior year. He served during the Vietnam War, first on the U.S.S. Bluegill submarine and later on the U.S.S. Constellation aircraft carrier.
In 1966, he married Janice Bolton, and they had four children. They later divorced and he moved to Utah in 1978. In 1987 he married Lorraine Kranendonk and added two stepchildren to his family. Family was always very important to him, and he spent time making sure his children knew the life skills they would need to succeed on their own. He could often be found tinkering at his workbench, troubleshooting and repairing many things from radios to old television sets or working outside on cars. He also loved to be out in his yard caring for his beloved roses.
Jim will always be remembered for his great sense of humor and his practical jokes. After starting to make them as a teen working at a restaurant, he became well known for the animal pancakes he loved to cook for his children, grandchildren, and many others. His made-from-scratch spaghetti sauce, chili and beef stroganoff were in fierce demand at family gatherings.
He was proud to be part of the Veteran community and rode his Goldwing motorcycle as an active part of the Patriot Guard for around ten years. He also loved taking his wife and grandchildren out on motorcycle rides. These last five years he was a member of the DAV and deeply valued the work they do to help disabled vets.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gearhart and Betty Kammeyer; his siblings, Robert “Buzz” Kammeyer, Sally Murphy and Nancy Daudet; as well as his grandson Kolby Haasch.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Lorraine Kammeyer; his children, Betty (Jay) Barnett, Michelle (Mike) Bostaph, James (Amy) Kammeyer, Jeannie (Joe) Ashcraft; his stepchildren, Robin (Mike) Sills, Bryan (Micheya) Evans; 16 grandchildren; one great-grandson and numerous nephews and nieces. His absence will leave a huge void in many of our lives.
Friends are invited to join the family for a viewing Monday, July 29th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Granger West 9th Ward at 4460 W Courtney Drive in West Valley City, UT.
He will be buried with full military honors on July 30th, 2024, at the Utah Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Park in Bluffdale, UT. There will be a viewing at 9 a.m. with a memorial service and then graveside services to follow. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the VA Hospital for their incredible care over the years. We would also like to thank Harmony Hospice for providing such loving care in the last weeks of his life.
