Elizabeth “Betty” Irvine Saunders, affectionately known as “Betty,” peacefully departed this mortal life and returned to her Heavenly Home on May 18, 2024, in Mesa, Arizona. Born on November 3, 1930, in the small Scottish village of Drongan-Ayrshire where she grew up and married William Park Saunders.
Her life journey took them from Scotland to Canada where they joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This led them to America, where she proudly became an American citizen. They built their first home together in American Fork, Utah and shortly afterward accepted a church calling to build churches in Canada, Wyoming and South Dakota. Afterwards they settled in Bennion, Utah where they continued to dedicate their lives to family, starting a business, and community service.
Betty and Bill raised four children: Richard, Charles (deceased), Anne, and Neil. Their family expanded to include 22 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren, leaving a lasting legacy of unwavering love and commitment to all.
They cherished their Scottish heritage. Actively participating in Utah’s first Highland Games while preserving their cultural legacy through organizations such as the Utah Scottish Association, Clan Donald USA, and the British Mission Association.
After Bill’s passing in 1987, Betty continued her life of service, she continued working, caring for her family, and everyone around her.
In her final years of her life she relocated to Mesa, Arizona to be with family where she continued to radiate warmth and generosity that was her hallmark.
Betty’s legacy lives on through her family and the warmth that she brought to all who knew her.
A viewing will be held on Friday, May 31, 2024 at 10:00 am. Funeral service 11:00 am., at Valley View Funeral Home, 4335 West 4100 South, West Valley City, Utah. A graveside service will follow at 12:30 pm. Valley View Memorial Park, 4400 West 4100 South, West Valley City, Utah.
