Chaunley attended Onequa Elementary and Madison Junior High schools. He always had a lot of energy, and as a boy worked on the family farm, helping his mom grow and sell produce at Growers Market in Salt Lake City. He was often the delivery boy, delivering produce to the various wholesale houses and grocery stores after it was sold at market.
Chaunley graduated from Granite High School in 1951. After high school he joined the military, enrolling in the United States Air Force on July 3, 1951. He went to basic training at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas. Sheppard was a training center for aviation mechanics and with the onset of the Korean War, Chaun was swept up in the accelerated need for specialized jet-engine mechanics. After basic training, he attended Aircraft and Engine School for six months. After his education, training and certification at Sheppard, he went to Chanute Air Force Base in Champaign, Illinois for two months to get experience as a jet-engine specialist working on GE J47 Turbojet engines.
For his final 3 years of military service, Chaun served at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, CA as an aircraft mechanic. At Travis he worked on the aircraft engines for strategic bombers, the B-36 “Peacemaker” and the B-29 “Superfortress”. These were the aircraft flown by the 46th/72nd Reconnaissance Squadron, one of the first long range reconnaissance units in the Strategic Air Command (SAC) and was considered the “eyes and ears of the cold war”.
Although a jet-engine specialist, his first station at Travis was working on reciprocating piston engines that drive propellers or “Recip’s”, because he could repair both piston-driven and jet engines. After that, he went to “engine buildup” in the QEC (quick engine change) unit, preparing engines to mount on planes. His final station at Travis was with the “engine teardown” unit where he would remove and break down the engines, crate them, then send them off to be rebuilt. Before finishing his service in 1955, Chaun was recommended for, and received, three service stripes.
After his military service, Chaun went to school at the Northrop Aeronautical Institute in Inglewood, CA. On September 7, 1956, he received his A&P (Aircraft Power Plant) certification in “Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics”. This FAA sanctioned education and training, along with his military experience, enabled him to secure a better job as an aircraft mechanic.
Chaun worked as an aircraft mechanic for Frontier Airlines for 14 years in Denver, Salt Lake and Idaho Falls. After Frontier, from 1970-1975, he worked for Streeter in the general aviation area of the Salt Lake City Airport, performing inspections, maintenance, repairs and engine overhauls on privately owned aircraft. He also worked as an aviation mechanic for Northwest Pipe Company, who operated their own fleet of planes for executives. His final job in the field of aviation was as a chief inspector for Key Airlines, working with the FAA to ensure all of the aircraft repairs and maintenance were properly completed and documented.
In 1984, Chaunley retired from aviation to oversee the various businesses and properties for Ju Partnership and Ju Properties. For the past 40 years he has guarded and took great care of the family farm and was a thrifty and frugal steward over the family properties and assets.
Chaunley loved the great outdoors. You could often find him hunting or fishing with various family members, or by himself, with the solitude of nature.
In his own way, (and we all know what that is) “CJ or Uncle” was very authentic and loyal. He called it like he saw it, lived fearlessly and cared deeply for his heritage and his people. He was there when he needed to be. Family events such as weddings, graduations, performances, holiday celebrations and general gatherings, were a top priority for him.
Chaunley was preceded in death by his father (Joy), his mother (Lee She), and his brothers Henry, Tonley, Songley, Pingley, and Albert. He is survived by his brothers David and Leonard (Judy), his sister Betty, and 20 nieces and nephews along with the next generations.
