June Lonergan Spencer of Juno Beach, Florida and Skaneateles Lake, NY died on November 9, 2021 in Juno Beach, FL. Born in Cortland, NY on June 30, 1931 to the late Lester G. and Grace L. (Landphier) Downing.
She graduated Homer Central High School, furthered her education and graduated from Powelson Business Institute, Syracuse, NY. She was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, West Palm Beach, FL.
June was an avid sailor and loved traveling. Over the course of her life she visited 31 countries.
In the early 50’s June and a girlfriend went to West Palm Beach on vacation, they both secured jobs and then called home to let their parents know they were staying. June was an accountant for the Palm Beach Post Times, corporate accountant for Florida Public Utilities and then Accounting/Office Manager for U & Me Transfer until relocating back to Homer, NY in 1969 where she married and resided with Thomas J. Longergan until his death in 1994.
During this time June was active within the community, she was on the Board of Trustees for Cortland Memorial Hospital, serving as Chairman of the Board from 1985-1986. Also serving several terms as a member of the Governing Board of Hospitals Trustees of NY State. In 1989, June was unanimously confirmed as the new Executive Director of the Cortland County Chamber of Commerce where she served until retiring in 1993.
Her community activities and involvement included: Cortland Repertory Theater/Board Member, Town of Homer, NY/Planning Board, Brewster House Adult Residence/Board of Directors Chaired Long Range Planning, Fortnightly Club/Past President, League of Women Voters/Board of Directors, Cortland Rotary/Board Member, member of Glen Haven Historical Society and Cortland Country Club.
She was active in numerous professional organizations: member of the local planning council for Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA), member of NY State Chamber of Commerce Executives, member of International Management Council Cortland County Chapter, Advisory Committee on Small Business Issues for the NY State Senate Committee on Commerce, Economic Development and Small Business. Advisory Board member for the “Center for Lifelong Learning” State University at Cortland, Member of the advisory Board for AGORA Small Business Center at Tompkins Cortland Community College.
Upon retiring she continued to split her time between Skaneateles Lake, NY and West Palm Beach, FL. In 2000 she married long-time friend Lee Spencer with whom she shared the past 11 years.
She is survived by her husband Lee Kirby Spencer; daughter, Bonnie Jill Gloor of Rochester, MN; son, C. Marcus Gruber III and wife Patricia of Fernandina Beach, FL; sister, Christine Parmiter of Cortland, NY; Granddaughter, Elizabeth Landphier Gloor and husband Scott of Seattle, WA, grandson Samuel James Gloor of NY, NY; grandson, Thomas John Gruber of Fernandina Beach, FL; grandson, C. Marcus Gruber IV of Lakeland, FL; great grandson, Alfie Edward Downing Harker of Atlanta, GA; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by spouse Thomas John Lonergan; brother, Maj. Edgar C Downing (retired); sister, Olivia Downing Hamilton; granddaughter, Susannah Downing Harker.
